Lebby concerns vs. Lebby strengths:

Lebby had a veteran QB in Dillon Gabriel. Dillon was also familiar with Lebby's offense and with Lebby himself, when he transferred to OU. Lebby had an NFL receiver (Denver) for Dillon to throw to his first year at OU. That was year 1.

Year 2, Lebby continued a nice job with Dillon as his QB and continued to develop him.

That's the good.

Here's the other side.

Lebby tends to make head-scratching calls during games. He will nearly always call a long bomb on first downs. That works about once out of 5 attempts. The other 4, he's in 2nd and 10, and sometimes 3rd and long. You'll see.

He is also OBSESSED with the horizontal game. He loves jet sweeps, reverses, double and triple reverses, and sideways passes, often behind the line of scrimmage.

Lebby doesn't seem to put much value into running the ball. I think he's actually less likely to develop a run game than Lincoln Riley. Lebby is very pass-oriented. His RB coach does ALL of the developing with the backs. At least that's how it was run here at Oklahoma.

Lebby is not a good clock manager during games. He will frustrate you on down and distance issues. For example, he'll throw a 40 yard bomb on 3rd and 1. Then you'll be punting.

Yes, the guy has put up points. No doubt. Yet, he will frustrate the sh*t out of you regardless. He put up points here in a weak Big 12 with a roster of top 10 recruits.

Can he do that at Miss State? I hope so for you guys. But I'm skeptical.

He put up legit numbers in the SEC with a middle of the row talented roster at Ole Miss. Maybe you guys need to get out more.

Regardless thanks for the write up.

I posted some stuff in the coaching board thread. Some stats and some observations, here they are:

——

And here’s a neat stat compared to Caleb Williams this year:

Sooner Script
@SoonerScript

With all of the well-deserved praise & recognition that Caleb Williams has received, I find this 2023 comparison with Dillon Gabriel delightful:

CW: 266/388; 68.6%; 3633 yds; 30 TDs/5 INTs; 170.15 Passer Rating

DG: 266/384; 69.3%; 3660 yds; 30 TDs/6 INTs; 171.98 Passer Rating

——

Now here is the question. 5*+ QB Jackson Arnold will be the OU starter next year. QB Dillon Gabriel has one more year left and as a graduate could transfer with immediate eligibility. The thought is he goes pro, and if he thinks he can catch on in NFL this would be the year to go with the stats he put up. But if he doesn’t think he gets drafted then he would likely transfer and my guess is with Lebby.

He’s a great person. Short of stature but gutsy. Great paser only limit is deep passes, he does not have a deep arm. He would do great there for his last year if he transfers.

——

As for Lebby. He can put up major stats. He struggles with situational awareness and that hurt us at key times this year. You will love him most of the time and curse him the rest.

Arnold is not starting over Gabriel if he returns. Get real dude

OUGuy:
Yes he is. Gabriel has his limits and Arnold is the future. If Dillon stayed and they were going to start him Arnold would bolt so fast my head would spin.

Everyone has expected this was DG last year. It wasn’t even known or talked about until middle of year he had another year if he wanted it. Coaches even talked as it was his last year all season.

It would be dumb to lose JA over 1 more year of Gabriel. Fans have been mostly nice about DGs shortcomings but all their expectations were he was gone after season so they mostly stayed tight lipped out of respect.

He has missed so many deep passes this year that would have mattered in close games. Arnold is taller, more mobile and can make all passes. He will be the starter.

And thats why DG will either go pro (if he thinks a team will draft him), or he will transfer. I think he respects the program and would not put them through that (staying).

The state folks seem to think we have a good shot at Gabriel if he doesn’t go pro

OUGuy:
I would love to see this for all parties. It would create a QB controversy if he stayed, and I think Dillon knows that. He is a super nice person who rescued us when LR bolted in middle of night and took most of offense with him.

Dillon loved it here and the fans loved him. He became great friends with Drake Stoops and said when he ever gets married Drake would be in his wedding.

FYI, Dillon was paired up with Lebby at UCF. So they have history beyond OU. One thing he would bring in year one is continuity to the offense. With Lebby being an offensive guy you will need a strong DC who will get to run it pretty much 100%.

Is this a legit done deal, or a Stoops to A&M done deal?

Y’all average 44 PPG and had one of the most elite offenses in college football. Y’all had a middling defense. But it’s Jeff Lebby’s fault y’all lost 2 games where he scored plenty of points for teams with just an average defensive effort could win.

I wish Lebby and State good luck.

Dogging OU fans for being upset with Lebby's offensive strategy, 44ppg, etc.is fine but within context this was the softest schedule OU has played in decades. It didn't take long to figure out Lebby must've been guided by Kiffin at Ole Miss because of his absolute ignorance of in-game situations and low-IQ decision-making wrt personnel. OU's in a rebuilding phase but regardless, the offense's management was not what we are used to. A large majority of OU fans wanted Lebby gone after last year.

That’s it?

Mullen ran a 160 lb RB through the A gap several times a game for an entire year and was still rumored to be in the running for every coaching vacancy in CFB at the end of the year.

Oh wait, I forgot. OU played Baylor that year. I'm sure they blew out the lowly bears with an offensive attack that scored... 14. And Ole Miss outgained OU with a backup QB.
lol the bears were ole miss a 3-4 years back. Me saying they were Ole Miss is really pretty funny co sidering the real Ole Miss is basically like playing Texas Tech or Iowa state … they may beat you once in ten years ..2019 the Bears finished 11-3 and 2021 they finished 10-2 …. Come to think about it Baylor may be better than Ole Miss considering you have only finished with 10 wins twice …. OU has finished 10 wins 19 times since 2000s themost in college football . 2 nd most alltime with 42.

Better than hiring a defensive minded coach or someone that thinks so highly of themselves then fails because they’re such a narcissist.

Imagine Oklahoma st or Texas fans coming in and defending a hire Oklahoma just made. That’s what’s happening in this thread, but OP is so bitter he can’t see it.

You type like you're barely literate. Your coach should steal more signs, maybe then his defense won't be dogshit.

I don’t want Lebby to leave, think he’s done a pretty good job overall.

I also think the Mississippi schools might be the least self-aware fans in the country. I’m not entirely sure who either of them beat this year to be so confident against OU. The Egg Bowl was damn near unwatchable, just horrible football. And talking about our defense being bad and acting like that won’t fly in the SEC? This isn’t 2012 anymore, most of the SEC plays bad defense, especially Ole Miss and MSU.
