He's certainly not the first gay football player in the NFL. He's just the first to try to use it to his advantage. I seriously doubt the others kept it hid during the extensive pre draft background search and interviews

imo, Michael Sam is old news. Sure, he's a leader for the gay and lesbian community and good for him coming out and showing homosexuals that it's okay to be gay, and they don't have to hide in "the closet." Yet, I'm sick of hearing his name, and that kiss, with him and his boyfriend, on draft night made me almost vomit. That being sad, he needs to just get a reality show on bravo, so his fans can follow his every move and the rest of us won't have to hear about him.

There is a huge difference between gay and openly gay

He wasn't even the first openly gay player in the NFL draft, he's about 40 years late.

Yeah? Are you saying it wasn't a huge deal that received massive amounts of media attention?

The real question is how embarrassing for the SEC for a gay yankkee no talent defensive end to run rough shot over the SEC and win DPOY.

He undeservingly was CO-dpoy... the guy he shared it with was a first round pick and 2nd place in NFL defensive rookie of the year, you know for comparison. While I'm at it the word is roughshod, not the 2 word jackasserry of rough shot.

No. He didn't. He CHOSE to do it under a magnifying lens. Nobody cares that he is gay except him. Had he not made it a big deal by "coming out" nobody would care and he would not have put himself in the spotlight.

By all accounts he's a nice guy and I hope he gets back to Toronto to play this year.

Not by all accounts. My next door neighbors grandson plays (played?) for Missouri when sam did and he said they hated him. He wasn't a nice guy and wanted attention continuously. You can take it any way you want to.

So why make a media storm out of it? Because he was brave? because he was true to hmself? To help his career? If you don't make a big deal out of it, a big deal won't be made out of it.

I have no idea why he did it. I also agree that he made a mistake. If he wanted to play football, that is.

If he wanted to get on dancing with the stars and Oprah he made a great decision.

I'll also add that Sam was very well liked by his teammates, coaches and students. I never knew anyone or heard anyone have a cross word against him.

Maybe your cousin's uncle's grandson tried to throw some booty at him and got turned down????

When did I say that? I'm saying that 45 years ago, it actually took courage to be openly gay. 45 years ago, being gay would actually prevent you from being on an NFL roster.

It was 2014, What Sam did, did not take courage, it took incredible narcissism.
