It's pretty obvious that the only reason you care is because he's gay. None of that is a big deal at all. He's doing what anybody else in his shoes, gay or straight, would do. The NFL has become a "measurables" obsessed league.
It's how you end up with a guy like Gabbert as a top pick, and a guy like Connor Shaw fighting for a roster spot.

In fairness, that's how Mizzou does a lot of it's recruiting. That is how we got Henry Josey for example.
That said, guys coming out of Mizzou and other SEC schools have had another 3-5 years of the best training and coaching there is.
It just seems to me that the NFL isn't catching on to the fact that their "farm system" is actually working very well, they just need to pay more attention to it.
And, btw, I completely agree w/ your point about Gabbert and Shaw.

Doesn't make it any less controversial, does it? So, you get to decide what is controversial and what is not? Either it IS controversial or it is not. I would say a sizable portion of the population finds it offensive...and that makes it controversial whether you like it or not.
