MEET THE BAG MAN

" The bag men associated with certain schools pay potential signees one-time bonus payments not to visit a rival school that's offered a scholarship. The going rate is stated to be $2,500. This has become a popular tactic in recent years, as the recruiting process has become more publicized."

Cameron Lewis changes his plans for the weekend.

Pay the boy!

FAVORITE QUOTES:
" I don't view what I do as a crime, and I don't give a shite if someone else does, honestly." DAMN STRAIGHT!

"No secret lair, although a couple guys have some pretty ridiculous-looking hunting camps. I mean, we're shooting the shite about college football players. That in and of itself isn't a crime. Sometimes we go to the Waffle House."
Calling Blue Tuna; fire up the flow chart!

" There is no dead bag man memorial on the campus of any football powerhouse." THIS IS SAD TO ME!

"Remember, your job as a bag man isn't to hide the benefit. It's to hide the proof. In a region as passionate about college football as the American South, there's no real moral outrage when new cars or clothes or jobs for relatives appear."

I didn't see this before, so I read it. Interesting, but I'm guessing it's about half as big as the guy being interviewed claims. He sounds entirely too much like someone deeply impressed by his own mastery of the subject, i.e. someone who is telling the truth in general but has no qualms about exaggerating whenever he can. I'm betting it's not so much Illuminati as Rotary Club.

If he was into honesty and fair play he probably wouldn't be a bagman.

Fair point. I'd hate to impugn the character of a man who launders money in order to bribe athletes under-the-table, but sometimes you have to accept that some people might not be entirely trustworthy.

Honestly, I always felt AU & Clemson were kindred spirits in the pursuit of high school athletes.....now Ole Miss must have deeper pockets.

I hate this underbelly of recruiting and back in the 1980s the NCAA tried to severely punish select schools that broke laws. UF & SMU were made examples of and its no coincidence that both schools were in fertile recruiting states. There were others that wanted the schools punished for their own gain. While SMU was a renegade program with blantantly open violations....do you think Texas or Oklahoma were lily white?

It took UF going on NCAA probation to boost Diddy Bowdens reputation....they gained a lot of recruits that would have gone to the flagship state school. Two years without TV, scholly reductions and no bowl games. We were slammed for what other schools were doing in the SEC then.

Its ok...we were able to have decent recruiting class (but still had reduction in numbers)in our first year out of the pokey...we signed some kid out of Pensacola named Emmitt Smith.
