Yet if the player breaks out of the pile and gains yards or scores before the whistle blows, they give it to him. How is that different? Why should the offensive player get the benefit of the doubt re: the whistle but not the defensive player? I'm going to go ahead and assume you won't come up with a good answer.

false start is a dead ball foul...an infraction that occurs before the play that ends the play

Except the play doesn't end when forward progress stops, it's marked there. The play ends at a whistle. Scoop you suck these days.
