I think any team should have concerns with a new DC coming in even A&M. There will be a learning curve/adjusment period for the players and for Steele too but if you are coaching a team with the talent level of LSU's defense then that makes your job that much easier.

I can't find the article right now, but shortly after Steele was hired he addressed the concerns about the complexity of his defense; essentially he said he's learned some things since his time at Clemson and the over-complexity is something he has worked to fix.
Now this could just be a new hire trying to sound good, but hopefully it is truth.

I'd be more concerned if I had a talentless, soft defense now run by the most basic DC in the business.

I'm at work and can't listen. I only saw this article as far as your scheme goes which was why I asked.
Remember this. Steele & Chavis were best friends. After his departure from Clemson and before he came back to Bama, he spent a season here hanging around breaking down tape. His son was (is?) a GA for Defense here under Chavis as well.
He's already intimately familiar with most of the Sophomores and Juniors as he watched a ton of tape on them. Most of the Freshman are kids he knew of via recruiting.
This isn't as big of a transition for him as you may think.

I do worry about Louisiana producing the LB talent to run a 3-4.
Moffittization is key and as someone who was in the S&C biz for a short time, he's one that could make it happen.

LSU has the best secondary in country and continues to sign the top defensive backs in the country. LSU is leading for 5 of the top 8 defensive tackles in the country in 2016 to go along with the number linebacker in the country. So point being Joe Blow off the street could coach that defense.

Honestly I am. Im not a biased homer and think just because he is at LSU he will be great, but having a defense full of 5 stars sure helps. Now a&m on the other hand, that's completely rediculous to think one coach can make terrible 3 star players a top defense.

I think a move to a 3-4 would be bad, not just this year, which we obviously wont, but it pretty much automatically puts you at a disadvantage against spread teams, and up-tempo teams. All becoming common in CFB, stick with the 4-3. I dont think bulking up Defensive Linemen and Linebackers is the best way to go.

No, just happy to have no more 3rd and Chavis. Looking forward to running the two minute drill on A&M though we probably wont need it seeing as we'll probably be up my several scores.

Not at all. Steele will mold his scheme to maximize the elite talent LSU has on defense
you say this as though Steele is a good coach
He has not coached a game yet in Baton Rouge, but I would bet my left gonad that he will better in the last 2 minutes of games....anyone would be better than Chavis...

My only concern is that Miles is hands off on defense but then again he is not much help on offense either but he can motivate and recruit

Im sure there will be a bit of a learning curve but hopefully the transition will be smooth and the rest of the defensive staff can help adjust.

im interested to see how much man to man we'll still play compared to under chavis. buy on a whole im not that worried. we will have the best group of corners in the country and one of the best d line coaches in the country.

I would expect to still see a lot of man coverage considering the type of DB's LSU has.

Yes. The guy is not a proven defensive coordinator and was fired from a school that does not hold defense to the same standard as LSU. One game got him fired which included 4 turnovers and a special teams score. He has never worked with this type of talent either so it could go either way but I am interested/concered in seeing how it plays out.

My only real concern is at QB. I have no concerns about the defense.

3rd and Chavis. Deal with it.

That doesn't answer the question

The question has been answered repeatedly throughout this thread.
No
The reason why is very simple. LSU has a lot of defensive talent. Our cornerbacks can and will play on an island, as usual, where they dominate opposing Wr's. Beckwith, our future high draft pick MLB, got experience and will be even better next year. We are replacing two defensive ends, but our recruiting over the last couple of years has us set there. Our interior line will mostly consist of Christian Lacouture, Godchaux, Valentine, and Q Thomas. That starting defense can and has already competed at a high level and will continue to do so. With that being said, Steele wont change the scheme up too much, but will change some things. I expect us to be more aggressive, our sack totals should go up. Chavis was more conservative. I prefer an attacking Dline not based on containment but gap penetration, like we saw with Glen Dorsey. We should see more of a refreshing return to the Chinese bandit style defense that LSU is accustom to having. Prepare your QB's, because this defense will be nasty.
As for a switch to the 3-4, it's possible. Not this year though, maybe later on, but it'll be a lot of over and under fronts to play to our strengths, which is another positive.
