LSU D will be fine. Lots of talent all over the place. Even if it dips in productivity slightly, most people won't really notice because they will still turn teams over a ton in the back end.

Chavis wanted his Defensive Lineman to anchor in place, play gap control, and allow the Linebackers to make the plays in his defense. His mantra was: We will defeat the run with numbers, and the pass with speed.

Chief loved to send pressure from the Secondary when blitzing on passing downs. He would give you exotic pre-snap looks at times. Example: Jerryworld, 2011 vs Oregon: Chief showed Double A-gap pressure pre-snap. It really befuddled Chip Kelly at Oregon; Chief saw on tape where Kelly's offense automatically checked the protection calls from the sideline when they read A-Gap pressure. Chief showed both interior LB which he knew would force the call (even if he guessed wrong on the A-Gap blitz) from the sideline. This really played tricks with the passing game they used, and it also got the Defense a breather as the check with me slowed down the Duck pace on their HUNH. It was truly a brilliant tactical decision on his part.

Mostly it was zone blitzing from the edge, and then late in the game he'll blitz off the edge over and over with some LB up the A-Gap stuff thrown in.

With Orgeron, I see LSU become more varied with technique. We'll still run gap control, but we'll also force double teams and shoot gaps. The interior tackles are going to be really influential with this. Early reports have Orgeron confident he can rotate 10 guys with the real depth being on the interior.

If those Defensive Tackles can impact the centers and guards on zone blocking schemes by slipping past the reach blocks and/or shooting the gap, then our Linebackers won't have to make as many plays as the DL will make some more as well.

This obviously means we'll see more pocket pressure from the Line compared to Chief.

I think we'll also see more blitzing off the edge and using the Linebackers because of some reports I've gotten about Steel's tendencies.

He's been working with some tweaks on responsibilities in the Secondary for the Safeties which tells me he's going to really depend on them to set coverage and read the offense pre-snap.

To answer the question, I think LSU will be truly special this year on Defense. Like Top 5 Nationally. Which may seem like another day at the office when you look back at the stats the past 10-12 years. But this year has a chance for the Tigers to be even better than normal.

Who do they have on the DL besides Godcheaux?

Christian LaCouture was a starter last year after being the only backup to play meaningful reps behind Freak Johnson and Ego Ferguson in 2013. We also have Quentin Thomas coming back from a biceps injury who started last year. Frank Herron, Maquedius (Quay) Bain, and some others.

The big X Factor is Travonte Valentine. He has not practiced this Spring. They've simply put too much time into getting him eligible on the field for him to be goofing off off the field like he is. So they withheld him from Spring Ball hoping he'll wake up.

He's got the potential to be an ANIMAL on the Line, whether starting or rotating in. But the light hasn't come on, which is a troubling sign.

What about the DE from the DMV?

Good luck to yall with Valentine. He was really talented out of HS, but a ridiculous headcase who had terrible grades.

People keep talking about Steele and although he will certainly have a great deal of input, the collective group of position coaches and Les will all still have a great deal of influence on how the defense will perform. Great players make great plays, sometimes in spite of play call and alignment. LSU will almost certainly be in the top 2 or 3 in SEC team defense and no lower than 15th nationally. The talent and the speed of that talent seems to be underplayed for some reason on this board. The LSU defensive beat will go on.

If I were you I'd be more worried about your teams defense than ours. We have talent. Y'all have a coach with no talent

Where you been we been throwing him under the bus after the last two home losses to Bama, lost to Ole Miss and after the bowl lost to Notre Dame.

Bower, Trey L, Teuhema, Bain, LaCouture, Thomas, Herron, Gilmore, Neil and a hand full of others. Hopefully Valentine gets his grades in order he will be the missing piece. A boat load of young unproven talent that has a lot of potential.

How many years are we supposed to tolerate losing 2-3 games every year due entirely due to the defense's inability to hold leads? Especially losing to Bama that way 50% of the times we play them!

Geaux watch tape of the Notre Dame game - especially the third and 4th downs.

You Aggies will see soon enough... There's a reason a majority of LSU fans prefer the coaches in place now over what we had last year.

Had more sacks in one game last year than Hunter had all season, fwiw.

That always bothered me about Hunter.

Chavis and Haley just couldn't put any fire into that line the last couple of seasons.

Look, I like Coach O and am pretty pleased with how it worked out. But the jury is still out on Steele and Chavis consistently had good/great defenses at LSU.

A slug could coach LSU's defense. Just keep blockers off Beckwith and that dude will make every play on the field.

Chavis consistently had good/great defensive players at LSU. Lets see what he does at A&M because their defensive talent is no where near what he was use to at LSU. He will shite a brick if he has not already, take that to the bank!

You do know a gap control defense will ALWAYS command 1 double team, right?

Even against a zone scheme with track blocking.

Did Chavis have to teach how to tackle when he got to LSU or did A&M's "dire need for defensive help" force him to start from ground zero? LSU will run for 300+ against Aggy with ease.

How so ? The Tigers have an elite set of defensive coaches and basically re-load on recruits every year ! Our football problems have predominantly been of the QB nature !
This. LSU defense will always be top shelf, but Les/Cam have to evolve that offense and soon.
