Little known fact about UK senior Alex Poythress

His Mom was diagnosed with Stage 5 kidney failure right after he committed to UK. Given that he's dealt with that, an ACL injury, an injury this season to his non-surgically repaired knee, and he's still managed to graduate in 3 years while pursuing his graduate degree is pretty impressive IMO. He was also recently named an Academic All-American.

“He announced he was going to Kentucky in November of 2011, and I found out I had Stage 5 kidney failure two months later,” she said. “Alex has been dealing with that. He’s a caring person and he tries to make sure everybody’s OK, so he’s definitely concerned about my health. But he’s never complained, never said, ‘My mom has this and I’m worried.’
“We don’t put that out there. It’s not an excuse. We aren’t complainers. Things happen and we just deal with it. But I’m just saying people don’t really know Alex. He tries to keep everything in, so they just really don’t know.”

He's Cal's 1st senior he recruited to UK to play on Senior Day

Technically true. Jon Hood committed to Gillespie originally but was part of Cal's first class, Jarrod Polson commited as a walkon but ended up as a scholarship player all 4 years, and Eloy Vargas play for Cal 2 years and graduated after transferring to UK.

And if the UofL/LSU fan who commented is counting Lee and Lewis as UofL seniors, then you can also count Wright State's Julius Mays in that for Cal since he recruited him as a grad transfer I believe.

I wish Wiltjer was still here to join him today. Really like him and Alex. Poythress has been nothing but a class representative of Kentucky during his tenure. Very intelligent and has a bright future ahead of him.

I'll certainly miss Poythress. And I hope at some point he can stay healthy enough to reach his full potential. He'll always remind me of Kelenna Azubuike in that regard. Looks like a guy who should flat dominate in the post (and shows flashes of that) but struggles to do so because he can't get out of his own way sometimes.

Wiltjer would have graduated last year.

Thanks for sharing Belle. Alex has been a great addition at UK. I know he was originally expected to be a one and done, and because of injuries he is still here, but he will get his chance at the NBA. I hope it works out for him.

You're right. Ugh. Losing my touch. Good call.

I commend Poythress for all the off the court challenges he's had to navigate it's nice to see people overcome personal challenges.
However, how bad of a player is he to actually be a Sr. at Kentucky?
