Really?So it's simply a round robin with teams rotating

The point of the argument, and I think it's a legitimate one, is it's not much of a conference if you don't see 1/3 of it but twice every decade. I don't have the perfect answer. But I do think the current system is broken. Here are the issues:
1) Certain matchups are considered sacred by their schools and must be preserved at all costs according to the involved schools: TSIO, the Cocktail Party, TORS.
2) Not every SEC school's biggest rival is a conference foe: USC vs Clemson, UGA vs Tech, UF vs FSU, UK vs UL mean as much to those schools as intraconference ones and they wish to preserve them and should be able to.
3) a non-divisional championship game presents unique problems of it's own like back to back matchups, tie breakers, and numerous issues WITHIN those issues. Who wants to see back to back Iron Bowls? Could a coach who has clinched a SECCG berth rest his starters and risk an L if he knew he would be facing the same team in Atlanta in 1-2 weeks? Would he play close to the vest to conceal the game plan in the first matchup, saving it for Atlanta? The iterations of the problems are very complex and very many.
Like I said, I agree the current setup is less than ideal and needs to be reviewed for improvements, but I'm not sure what the best answer is. All I know is it's a travesty that some teams only see each other twice in 7 years. I know someone will throw out the idea of pods and on the surface, it does look promising. But we need to look carefully and make sure its better before we go messing up what we have.

There's a 14 team pod idea called "The Roommate Switch". But pods will work better @ 16 teams.
Also, a 9 game season WILL HELP see people faster than every 6 years. Strange how most don't want it, but argue about the delay in scheduling caused by 8 games.

The 9th game loses money.
UGA can play Clemson/NorthCarolina/NotreDame.
Ole Miss can play whoever out of conference.
Those games will sell tickets and advertising. It is 2 games making money.
If you scratch the out-of-conference for the extra UGA v Ole Miss game, then you are left with less ticket sales and less TV revenue and a game on the schedule where everyone goes, "meh".
I'd rather play Clemsons and Notre Dames than rushing through the conference faster to get an extra crack at Mississippi State. The TV advertisers agree.

And this is why we will never have a 9 game schedule. Even if the conference goes to 16 teams. Well maybe, just maybe, with 16 teams.
It doesn't take long for them to vote no when it is pointed out that 14 full stadiums is better than 7 full stadiums and 7 empty stadiums on the day the 9th game is being played.

The ultimate concern here is road trips and that's not as high of a priority when it comes to the schools themselves(outside of fans)

9th game loses money because the 4 Eastern teams with in-state ACC rivals take up a game. Force the other 10 get an OOC rival as well.

Every other year you'll have the 1 extra H game. There's no way around that.

Roomate switch proposal makes too much sense not to do at some point. It essentially gives you two divisions every year and allows for a normal ccg decided in a normal fashion. It also only requires 8 conference games a year - so it doesn't unbalance schedules with home versus away problems.

Must everything always be about money?? I don't see any SEC football team going broke anytime soon. Well, maybe Ole Miss when we cut off the bowl revenue. But otherwise, can't it be about the competition and the fans and the conference and NOT about the Benjamin's?
