Why wouldn't he want to coach the best CFB program in the state of Mississippi?

Kirby will not get the USM job. They'll hire Anderson (b/c of familiarity) or Ellis Johnson. Kirby would have to have an incredible interview to get that job.
The reason a lot of the BCS schools aren't offering is partly b/c he is 35 years old w/ no HC experience at any level. The reason he is interviewing at USM is b/c he realizes he could go there, do well, and have a BCS HC job by 38-39 years old.

I would have to agree with what most have said, Southern Miss is a really good school. They are in the top 25 this year and usually are a bowl team. With Ole Miss being so down, you really could see Southern Miss start moving up in recruits lists in Mississippi and if Smart goes and does well for 3 to 4 years, you would see a ton of AQ schools go after him. I really think that this is one of the top non-AQ jobs you could get and considering that this would be his first head coach job, I really don't think that realistically he could have asked for a better first job.

I seriously doubt Southern will ever get a major recruit that can qualify at an SEC school that wants them. If you are a 4-5 star recruit in Mississippi this year and you had an offer from Ole Miss or Southern, why would you go to a C-USA school that averages 20k fans at their home games, and has terrible facilities? Ole Miss and State both have huge advantages in almost every category over Southern.

seems like he would be settling with SM....thoughts?
My thought is that if you are an assistant and you can get a head coaching job at a school that goes bowling every year, you fricking pounce on it. Any more questions?

Bama is going to remain dominant for at least another decade, depends how long Nick stays. Is Smart is gone, that sucks, but Nick will get someone with a similar philosophy who can fill in.

Let's hope and pray that he makes the same suggestion to Bama as he did LSU.

The poster has better contacts on the coaching staff than most people I've ran across. He's pretty accurate with the information he brings here.

I believe the poster went to high school with one of the support staff guys.

Not at all. If Kirby kills the interview and gets they job I'll be very happy for him. I just don't expect him to get the job b/c the decision is most likely going to come down to the two coaches I mentioned earlier.
Go back to yesterday or the day before when all the Aubbies were hyped about Mark Stoops and I told them it wasn't happening. Jeff Lee was claiming it was possible he would be announced yesterday. I said no way. That's one example for ya. (ETA: no way, meaning it wasn't happening yesterday. conversations are ongoing, but nothing agreed to yet. I still don't think Stoops takes it, but $1.1M is a lot more than FSU is offering).
I did not go to HS with any support staff at Bama. I have a few friends in coaching, one of which is in football ops at Bama, as well as the agent side of it.

As mentioned with Gus' hiring, the ADs are thinking twice about hiring a coach with no HC experience. The Smart ones saw this and are taking what they can get.

Most coaching contracts have incentives for making a BCS bowl game, and then winning one.
