What?

Kyle Tucker at the Courier-Journal

quote:

A possible replacement for Antigua on Calipari's staff is Tony Barbee, one of his former players and assistants who was recently fired as head coach at Auburn — although Barbee is still angling for another chance in the head-coaching ranks.

Larry Vaught

Barbee worked six years as an assistant under Calipari at Memphis and played for him at UMASS. Some speculated that he might get the job that went to ace recruiter Barry Rohrssen after Orlando Antigua left for South Florida.

A post from the media guys at 247/CatsPause

How does this affect UK? Barbee played at UMass under Calipari and was an assistant on Calipari's Memphis staff from 2000-2006. If a spot on UK's staff opens up this year, I would fully expect Barbee to be the favorite to be hired. Both Orlando Antigua and Kenny Payne have been mentioned for head coaching jobs the last few offseasons. Also, it's worth noting Antigua's and John Robic's contracts expire after the season.

So you must've had the inside word over all of the UK beat writers too.

Oh, on a side note…rumor going around…Jaylen Rose was considering the gig that Barbee just landed.

You mean what came from Jalen's own mouth over a week ago on his podcast?

Stop the presses.

I was really surprised Cal didn't hire him in the assistant spot that opened up when Antigua left for USF. I figured this was probably a foregone conclusion once he was fired from Auburn.

Slice got O's spot, but yeah this could be seen from a mile away. Cal was pimping Barbee as COY in the SEC last year and tried to convince Memphis to hire him when he left.

Makes the rant tard look civil…those fools don't know jack.

It was known way before Slice took the job he was heading to Kentucky.

Right. At the time Barbee got fired the words, "he'll probably be hired at Kentucky if anyone leaves" was pretty well tied to any news of him getting fired.

I'm not saying Slice was a bad hire or anything or that Barbee should've been there over him. But it's not a stretch to think Barbee was considered for O's position while Slice was still in his home state as an assistant or for what was really close to being a Kenny Payne opening as well.

And Barbee was also mentioned by several. Especially with Kenny Payne being courted at the same time and Stickland moving to USF with Antigua.

But I love how apparently all of UK's beat writers must bow down to the all knowing WildcatMike and his UKAA neighbor.

Oh for sure. I think Barbee probably gets that position if Slice turns the job down or like you said if Payne left as well.

By the way, I got the Rose considering the job from listening to Matt Jones on KSR. But, we all know how much you loathe him.

LOL, only inside info I get from him is regarding softball and football.

Jalen Rose in the SEC would be amazing.

IMO we were pretty close to losing Payne to Southern Miss this time around. Especially being spitting distance from his hometown.

I also think Slice was a bit of a priority because he is known as a damn good big's coach and Kentucky has a few of them this year.

He was pretty openly rooting for UK to win the NC. He loves that validation of the one and done and Cal essentially telling the NCAA to frick off with his success on the court. I imagine he'd love to be a part of that should he ever tire of his radio/analyst gig. Would be a great tool to have for those young guys coming in for just a couple years.

Slice was also offered an assistant position by Cal several years ago…he turned it down and Kenny Payne got the job.

Slice said today that the reason he decided to take the job was he wants to help his buddy Calipari get into the Hall of Fame.

Probably helps that Pitt has fallen off a bit as well.

And Barbee was an assistant with Cal, as we all know, and arguably one of the best recruiters he ever worked with.

I never said Slice wouldn't have gotten a spot or wasn't in Cal's wheelhouse, but you acting like it's a stretch that people considered Barbee for a spot on Cal's staff when he was fired from Auburn because there was a good chance UK would be looking at two openings instead of one is hilarious.

I think I agreed Barbee would had gotten the job as the other recruiter if Payne went back home…he did not get the Southern Miss job back in April when Slice took O's position.

Sorry, I do not take Kyle Tucker or Vaught as "real info".
