Not really. They didn't qualify as the Northernmost Mt. Gumpette said.

To be fair the Dominican team has never had an Olympic birth. He was one victory short of it. Would've been pretty damn cool if he could've got it. The guy certainly likes a challenge.

ETA: I think you have me confused with CatFan. She's the UK poster with the Bama significant other.

Guy asking about DR recruiting:

Karl Towns 2015 top 10 recruit in 8th grade. made the DR Team. The Cal haters are out in force about improper contact, and unfair recruiting.

6'11" 225 8th grade. On the DR team.

Karl Towns

They just fail to mention if they're going to shite on Calipari for having a high school kid on the DR team (that doesn't even have an official offer yet) then they have to in the same light shite on Donovan, Smart, and Few for coaching US high school kids they're actively recruiting.

And as I said, I don't think it's unfair or anyone establishing a pipeline. It's guys who are wanting international experience (different rules/different types of coaching to expand your wheelhouse) who got an offer to coach a national team so they took it. I'm sure all those guys would've loved to have coached the USA team but Coach K has that locked up for awhile now.

That's a tall eighth grader! I wasn't sure how he got involved with the DR National team. I want Johnny Jones to raise his profile and coach a national team if it will help the program.

The main reason I was asking is because the other examples are completely different. First, Nolan Richardson coached the Panamanian and then Mexican squads after he left college ball, not during. Second, Pitino did not coach Puerto Rico (which is a US commonwealth, mind you) because the NCAA disallowed it.

LINK

So some here need to get their facts straight on the matter.

The U18 roster contains exactly 3 players who are class of 2013. All others are already committed. None are attending UF, VCU, or Gonzaga

You didn't even read your own link.

No where does it say Pitino wasn't allowed by the NCAA to coach the Puerto Rican team. Pitino didn't continue to coach the Puerto Rican team because of scheduling conflicts (he coached them for a few months beforehand so yes he did coach the Puerto Rican team until he withdrew).

What wasn't allowed by the NCAA was Pitino taking the University of Louisville Basketball team down at the same time to play in a tournament so that he could coach both the Puerto Rican team and UofL on an out-of-country trip that's allowed by the NCAA (except Puerto Rico is not considered out of country by the NCAA which is what was disallowed by the NCAA).

And the Dominican Republic team has ONE player eligible for college competition. The basis of your whole shoddy argument about some pipeline being formed.

Please keep editing in more things to make your argument look bad. Pretty please.

You didn't even know he didn't coach them or that Nolan Richardson wasn't a college coach when he coached the Panamanian and Mexican teams so

I'm going to stop responding, because I don't have an argument and you are too stupid to understand. You can't argue with someone who has no idea what the frick they are doing. Peace, chief.

Yep...and he has definitely recruited his fair share of players with latin heritage.

Francisco Garcia
Juan Palacios
Peyton Siva
Edgar Sosa

...just a few. Not sure where they were born, but definitely a plus to walk into a recruit's home knowing you have experienced their culture a bit.

Speaking of, he's back playing with the Dominican Republic after a NASTY leg break in international play. I thought that kid was done after seeing that. Glad to see him back on the court.

Pitino didn't coach for the Puerto Rican team until after he had those guys on the roster FWIW.

I think some people are bitching just to bitch. As someone said earlier, I'd like to see Johnny Jones coaching an international team. It's not like the DR is pumping out high level prospects every year. And Cal has been there long enough to realize he didn't just get the gig to recruit a high school freshman.

I thought there was a JUCO kid from New York that was playing with DR this year? Or maybe he played with them before. Orlando something or other.

Did Cal ever coach the PR team at one point, or did he just recruit all their players to UMass at the same time? Travieso and Padilla

Gerardo Suero plays for Albany. I think I read somewhere that he declared for the NBA draft but wasn't selected.

Something else that's been brought up as to why Cal picked up the Dominican Republic stint was to potentially get Orlando Antigua (current UK assistant from the DR) in a position to take over the squad in a couple years. He's currently an assistant on the DR team.

Touche. I was convinced Pitino had taken a Latin mistress at some point with some of the guys he's pulled.

It was Orlando Sanchez. He's from the Bronx, played at a JUCO in NY and is supposed to go to St Johns. 6'8" PF. I guess he didn't make the team this time, but he's played on it before.

Pipeline broken.

or

:inb4CalkickedhimofftheteamfornotcommittingtoUK:

I think that's the kid that Auburn was in on at some point. And he was on the 2011 team. Scored double-digits in an exhibition last year against some former UK guys in Lexington.
