From all reports Jalen's spent every day since the loss to Clemson working and improving his downfield passing. Saban acknowledged he's made tremendous progress and Jalens Spring game showed vast improvement. Tua walked on campus first day as a True Freshman as great downfield passer - better than Jalen was at any point of the season last year as a True Freshman. Tua had a great spring game and will, from all reports, see playing time in the FSU game.

Saban has never been blessed with the riches he has now at QB. In truth why would Saban even consider playing Tua vs FSU if he didn't think Tua is a better downfield passer than Jalen. The door is wide open for Tua to beat out Jalen. I don't have any special sources but everyone, including the media, conceed's Tua's spring passing performance bested Jalen and he continues to best Jalen in camp and in scrimmages.

Bottom line: I think Tua has better than a 50/50 chance of beating Jalen out by the October 7th start of the A&M game.

Then why did Saban make a point of saying Tua will play in the FSU game?

Spring games mean nothing. I wonder if Saban promised Tua playing time 1st year cause its crazy not to redshirt since Jalen is only a sophomore.

you got a lot of downvotes but i agree with you. A couple of deep bombs in the A day game vs awful coverage and knowing you arent gonna be hit by a defender isnt like playing vs LSU or Clemson. He has time to get better though but Tua has a much higher ceiling.

The backup is the best QB on the team?

Never heard that almost every single season.

Here's your problem, this isn't anywhere close to being true.

That's had great drives vs 2nd team defense. He was less than mediocre against 1st team.

Plus, a lot of Tua's offensive numbers came in Jeudy saving his arse.

I'm an Alabama fan not blinded by passion. Jalen Hurts couldn't throw a downfield pass to save his life in the last 3 games of the season. Jalen's poor passing cost Alabama the National Championship. Jalen's timing was off so badly last year Kiffin stopped throwing deep altogether. Tua doesn't have that problem. If Jalen doesn't prove he can throw deep successfully early in the season Tua will be the starter.

Saban won't allow Alabama to become a one dimensional team like they were at the end of the season last year? That's why hes going to play Tua in the FSU game and if he proves to be a better passer than Jalen he'll probably win the position.

Brother, I watched Jalen pass today. He's not bad. Tua had a terrible scrimmage 1 week ago, not 1 but 2 pick sixes. Jalen is the starter, Tua is the backup, he will play in cleanup or if Jalen gets hurt. If Jalen flies off the handle and throws a game he may play then. Relax and enjoy the season don't make it a big deal.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like you live in Tuscaloosa and have access to more first hand information than I do. I went to all 15 games last year and as the season wore on the crowd and fans I came in contact with traveling, tailgating, and just mingling with at hotels & restaurants were mostly honest with themselves and each other that Jalen had problems throwing the ball downfield. The consensus I heard at games was the backs were frustrated Jalen was running too much taking playing time and opportunities away from them and the wide receivers were frustrated Jalen couldn't throw the ball downfield. Kiffin did the best he could with Jalen's limited passing skills and changed the offense to accommodate him. In the end it wasn't enough to win the Championship and Saban vowed not to let Jalens poor passing limit the offense this year. When Tua arrived in January as a True Freshman he was a better passer than Jalen was and had ever been. Now here we are about to face FSU in a BIG game. If Jalen struggles throwing the ball downfield I don't think Saban has any choice but to give Tua the ball to prove to the team he's going to play the best player.

Don't know how its possible for a guy to be SEC Offensive Player of the Year as a freshman and to be getting as little respect as Hurts is going into 2017.

He's really good and will get better...and this is coming from an AU fan.

I do get a lot of info and attend some closed events. Doesn't mean I know it all. My point is, Jalen has improved and it's noticeable. If he totally sucks it up against FSU, sure give Tua a shot and see how it goes. Yes some WR's were frustrated, but understood he's a freshman and needs time. We lost the natty for a few reasons and Jalen's passing was a small one.

You, and the fans that you talk to, don't seem to understand that he was a true freshman, and that all of his deficiencies were to be expected because he was a true freshman.

The dude had one of the GOAT true freshman seasons for a QB. He isn't going to get benched in favor of another true freshman who in all likelihood wouldn't come close to having as good of a season as Jalen had last year.
