Traditionally this was a rivalry of mutual respect. These were the two premier programs who both knew this was the game to test their mettle. It wasn't really hate like Iron Bowl et al. Fulmer changed that, he was mean spirited about it culminating in his NCAA screwjob.

And at the same time let his own program flounder. Vols are starting to come out of the wilderness a little, a beat down from Bama and they may never find their way back.
