OH, Bama has played PSU and Duke OOC since Saban's arrival.
Saban also scheduled GT and MSU home and home, both cancelled since. Saban normally prefers neutral site games in recruiting hotbeds, it seems to work well for him.

This game never happens if BCS was still in place. Saban knows he can now lose a game like this and still have the opportunity with a run in the SEC to still make the 4 team playoff. Match ups like this are probably an unintended consequence of the new playoff system. Probably good for the game.

I forgot about Duke, but that isn't much of a game. Every other SEC team plays home and home out of conference games. I always found it curious that Saban was the only SEC coach who seemingly didn't believe in doing that

I find it curious that more coaches don't copy him. As I noted, it has worked very well for him.

We can't always schedule national powerhouses like Kansas State in Manhattan (KS that is....)

Some of those teams like Penn State might have more tradition, but Kansas State has been as good or better than any non conference opponent Alabama has played under Saban since Bill Snyder returned as their coach.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Alabama has played a non conference opponent under Saban that finished the season with more than 8 or 9 wins

Retweeted by Eye on College FBall Tom Fornelli ?@TomFornelli 13m That 2016 USC-Alabama game is going to be awesome since Lane Kiffin will be coaching Alabama by then.
...so the REC planted Kiffin into Rocky Top to make them suck, then brought him to Bama to be the coach in waiting?
Masterful I must say!
REC doin work!

Life as a Bama fan:
Schedule non-con game against USC; get criticized for schedule.

It's amazing to me that anyone could find a way to criticize that non-conference schedule. It's not like this is a NCAA video game where you make the schedule a week before the season starts and can pick any team you want. No one knows what each team will be ranked when you play them or how a team will finish the season when the game is scheduled 3 or 4 years in advance. All you can do is try to schedule historically strong programs and hope it becomes a quality game. We have done that every single year.

This is why people are pumped about this match-up
"In their history, the teams have produced 26 national champions (11 by USC, 15 by Alabama), 66 bowl victories (32 USC, 34 Alabama), 7 Heisman Trophy winners (6 USC, 1 Alabama), 272 All-American first teamers (161 USC, 111 Alabama), 797 NFL draftees (483 USC, 314 Alabama), 52 College Football Hall of Fame players (31 USC, 21 Alabama) and such legendary coaches as USC's Howard Jones, John McKay, John Robinson and Pete Carroll and Alabama's Wade Wallace, Frank Thomas, Bear Bryant and current head coach Nick Saban."
Could not be more excited about this game!
