"Voluntarily" stepped down.

We now have an interim President while the current search takes place.

I once walked out on Neyland in 10 inches of snow at night, all lights on. It was awesome.

Is there a back story to this, pray tell? It seemed like he accomplished a lot for TAMU. The move to the SEC happened on his watch, and that will benefit the school in many more ways than just athletically.

You can't put a price on getting out from under the Longwhorns shadow, after all.

Dude, you know that if there's no sign denoting that, then it's fair game...

That said, I do know that LSU used to always leave one gate open during business days, but I don't know if they still do that after some kids burned down one of their concession stands a few years ago. Also, they just had a big country music festival there this weekend that they are cleaning up from--not to mention that part of it is currently a construction zone for that new upper deck of theirs--so it could well be closed off to the general public right now...

They do tours all the time but with cleanup from Superfest it will probably not be open but you could sneak your way in to get a glimpse because gates will be open

Was able to get in. Pretty cool walking out onto the field while they were cleaning up super fest.

New addition looks amazing. Can't wait for November.

Texas-sized egos, backroom oilman politics, and big business mentality all played a factor in Loftin being "voluntarily" resigned. He's said he will die in Aggieland, however. So he'll be back.

with the clean up from Bayou Country superfest you could easily find a gate open, just tell the workers you're passing through and wanted to see it real quick if anyone questioning you. Hope you get to take a look.

Edit. Just saw you got in. awesome.

Several stories have been floated. In the end, they all come down to power moves by Chancellor John Sharp (former student and Gov. Rick Perry A&M classmate).

A good number of folks on the academics side of things didn’t like him at all--particular dislike was over Loftin’s approach to research (not as strong [$] as some wanted). Many felt he was very much a "yes-man" in far too many areas. He was great with the students (undergrads loved him); but his leadership in academic/research issues was lacking. That was the faculty POV, anyway.

The big rumor--always has been--is that A&M Former Student, Gov. Rick Perry, wants the gig. Last year's announcement that he wouldn't be seeking re-election as governor obviously did nothing but fuel that fire. Needless to say, it's a very contentious topic; and the rumors never die ....

Bottom line: Loftin didn't want to resign. After he stepped down, he was simply going to return to the classroom at TAMU in an academic/professor role. Then along came Mizzou ... the rest is history.

I wish him nothing but the best. Great guy who loves, eats, & breathes Texas A&M University. He was the right guy for the job at the right time (athletics-wise), but he had/has many detractors in areas related to academe.

Was the field damaged any by the concert? I heard that has been a problem in the past.

I can see that. I always thought that Loftin was the driving force behind Texas A&M changing their minds about the Big 12 and getting into the SEC. I remember seeing Bowen contacting Slive and saying the Aggies regretted not getting into the SEC when first offered.

Was it Bowen's idea to switch gears and join the SEC? Or was his hand forced by the SECede movement?

The Superfest pays for it to be re-sodded every year

WRONG....That's NEVER been a problem because the contract has always called for a complete re-sodding of Tiger Stadium, following the Bayou Country fest !

It was (mostly) TexAgs (the nation's largest sports message board) that got the ball rolling. The first time we turned down the SEC offer in 2010, Loftin's office was swamped with students, emails, and phone calls about how he was literally Hitler for once again "bowing down" to the teasips. It was a turning point for Texas A&M fans. We were mocked and ridiculed by the BU,TT,UT collective and our fans decided that would never happen again. Political pressure from Baylor and UT won out, and we were forced to so "No" to the SEC for a second time in 30 years. (Simple google search will bring up hilarious news stories from the UT-biased newspapers about how we "never had an offer from the SEC in the first place" )

Here is a portrait of the Big 12 after Nebraska and CU left and we decided to stay:

Loftin will tell more about exactly why he made the decision to leave 100+ years of tradition behind for a conference we should have been in for a long time. But he got enough of an earful that he realized he had the backing of our fans if the issue ever came up again.

Makes sense. I was shocked when the Aggies turned down the SEC the first time. It seemed like a natural fit...still does.

Honestly, I'm not sure there is a unanimous opinion. Seems like everyone feels differently about Perry. Many business-types love him (Texas has thrived under his leadership); academics and democrats hate him. Sharp, OTOH, is not too popular in any circles. Some say he'll throw his hat in the TAMU presidential search arena too (I don't think that will happen).

Add to the mix the never-ending rumor that TAMU former president, Dr. Robert Gates, is the number one choice (by most) and is purported to have a standing offer (which I highly doubt), and you've got--exactly as has been said--a political powder keg.

In the end, life goes on. And Texas A&M University is bigger than one person.

I'm not a democrat in the slightest, but I detest his anti-educational policies and what he is trying to do to my university. We've fallen like 12 spots in the USNWR in 3 years because of his bullshite. When will the bleeding stop?

I by no means meant to paint with a broad brush--which is why I said there seem to be as many opinions about Perry as there are Former Students.
I hesitated to even respond, for that very reason.
My apologies if I came across as speaking for all, Gradual_Stroke.
