Well they called it wrong.

You know, kind of like that obvious block in the back that they PICKED UP THE DAMN FLAG ON.

Be prepared to lose 2-3 DL for multiple games. The cutblock like mofos.

Don't look now, but I think you just described exactly what happened.
So it is diving for a loose ball, if someone catches the ball, then lunges for the back of a players knee?

I think we can all agree the hit was unfortunate but ultimately it doesn't look to have directly caused the injury. I'm not sure it is dirty, per se, but it is perfectly legal albeit cheap. I wish the NCAA would outlaw these types of blocks. Ole fish fry at GT would probably shite a golden brick but it would be a long time coming.

A bammer posted the applicable rule on page 2 of this thread and none of you numbnuts bothered to read it.

Blocking Below The Waist (9-1-6)

a. Team A prior to a change of team possession:

Consider a low-blocking zone seven yards on each side of the snapper extending five yards beyond the neutral zone and back to Team A’s end line (Rule 2-3-7 and Appendix D).

1. The following Team A players may legally block below the waist inside this zone until the ball has left the zone: (a) players on the line of scrimmage completely within this zone at the snap and (b) stationary backs who at the snap are at least partially inside the tackle box and at least partially inside the frame of the body of the second lineman from the snapper.

2. Players not covered in paragraph 1 (above) while the ball is still in the zone, and all players after the ball has left the zone, are allowed to block below the waist only if the force of the initial contact is from the front, but they may not block below the waist if the force of the initial contact is from the side or back. “From the front” is understood to mean within the clock-face region between “10 o’clock and 2 o’clock” forward of the player being blocked.

3. Once the ball has left the zone a player may not block below the waist toward his own end line.

From the OP's screen caps it is obvious that Michel and the ball are long gone from the low blocking zone, as he is out near the numbers...much more than 7 yards from where the center snapped the ball.

By that rule alone the hit was ILLEGAL and should have been penalized. The way the rule defines "front" makes it impossible for the block to have been legal. By the comments from the UGA fans ITT the block was below the waist...even if you can't see it in the pictures, which make it obvious.

Was it a cheap shot? IMO that is the classic example of a cheap shot, in addition to being illegal. He hits Shy from behind or possibly the side so Shy has no idea he's about to be hit. That is what caused him to lose his balance and get his foot stuck in the turf.
