Second only to Keith Jackson IMO. But even then they're probably equals. I loved listening to Larry Munson. I remember he and Van Note used to have a show together on 680. Was a hoot to listen to those two old guys talk about anything.

Tough call.... use to listen to larry broadcast Georgia games as a kid on cold fall nights in NE pennsylvania. He had a unique voice and style.
To me my favorite was the one and only legendary Cawood ledford. I was never a Ky. fan and just liked listening to their games hoping they would lose. His basketball announcing was elite and better than anyone I ever heard. His football broadcasts was also elite, even with that stiff Ralph Hacker as his color man.
Munson and Ledford were my favorites and I'd throw in Ward at Tennessee also,

I'm no Kentucky fan but IMO Cawood was the gold standard in college basketball.

Tony Barnhart wrote a book about 20 years ago, I think it was updated later in that decade, called "Southern Fried Football" which was about Southern football in general, not just the SEC.
There was a large section about famous Southern college football broadcasters, the motivation being that those voices were such an important part of the tradition in this region.
All the SEC people mentioned here were included, along with folks like Woody Durham at North Carolina, Bob Harris at Duke and somebody who I always thought was great but only the old farts like me will probably remember ... Al Ciraldo at Georgia Tech ("Toe meets leather").
There was a large section about famous Southern college football broadcasters, the motivation being that those voices were such an important part of the tradition in this region.

Munson started doing Georgia and Atlanta games after getting into an argument with WSM radio and tv management in Nashville. Munson had done Vanderbilt games for years as well as Nashville Vols games in the old Southern Association from the late 40s to early 1960's.

I was driving back from Tennessee to Florida with my mom. Going through Georgia I scanned the radio and picked up Munson doing a game someone. I can’t remember the exact quote but he stated that the opponent was killing them. Something along the lines of “they’re killing us, our eyes are bleeding, our noses are bloody”. Classic.
I thought about it later and looked. Georgia won the game I think.
Personally I like my teams announcer. Mick Hubert. Only man at the college level to call championship games in the 3 big sports.

Easily the biggest apologist I ever heard do play by play. You never knew what was actually happening, and never heard down and distance verified.

He was, but in an age where a lot of linemen didn't outweigh him but by 25-30 pounds. Now, a lot of teams have running backs that are 6-1 225. He was just bigger and faster than most players of that era. It would be interesting to see how a young Walker would fare playing in today's football world. We already know he wouldn't be getting 35 plus carries a game. I don't know if his body would hold up in today's era.

He was getting 30 to 40 carries a game vs stacked defenses but ya don't know if his body would "hold up" getting less than 20 carries a game in today's offenses?
