Tough to make sense with AU fans. They love to talk about the success Malzahn had as an OC, except 2009 & 2011, that was Chizik's fault.

He was actually the WR and TE coach at Purdue and OU, respectively.. The only QB's you should mention with Sumlin are Keenum and Manziel.

For me, the jury is still out on Sumlin. Going 8-4 before Duke last year with JFF, Evans, Matthews was quite a disappointment. The past two stops, he's inherited his talent and I'm pretty interested to see how he does this year with more of his own guys.

I'm sure none of that made sense to Aggies and I'm about to get berated.

The jury is still out on him as an entire product due to defense.

Offense - #1 SEC two years in a row
Recruiting - Lights out
Defense - Decent year 1 and Dumpster Fire in year 2

In your opinion why did A&M go 8-4? Was it because the offense underperformed? Because thats where all 3 of those stud players you listed played. Maybe, and stick with me here, A&M lost 4 games because their defense sucked.

Also just as an aside, I think its absolutely hilarious that Sherman is getting credit for Manziel when he only had him during his redshirt season.

How come Sherman isnt getting enough credit for that shitastic defense that was on the field last year?

wat?

Auburn finished 3rd and 2nd in the SEC in scoring & total offense (16th & 17th in the country). That isn't successful to you?

2011, that was Chizik's fault.
Well, the one year out of the 8 years he's been in college football where his offense wasn't successful should seem like the outlier instead of the norm.

Manziel doesn't get hurt against AU last year they likely win that game, and maybe don't lose again. The problem with those high octane Offenses is your Defense is on the field quite a bit and gets worn out. Probably has a psychological effect on the Defense as well, thinking their Offense will score and bail them out.

Sumlin was "co-OC," for one year only, at a school where the head coach does the play calling. But sure, let's give him all the credit for recruiting and developing Sam Bradford. He was also Drew Brees' wide receiver coach, so all the credit in the world for developing Drew Brees.

You can't just take random associations with players and say "ermagahd he coached Sam Bradford, drew Brees, Drew Bledsoe, joe theisman, Jesus Christ himself...sumlin is the best!!"

If Sumlin was white would he get more credit?

He called plays at A&M. Best year Reggie had and went way downhill after he left.

Look, you all can try to poke holes in his ability as a head coach and developer, but FACT is, he has never finished below 13th in the nation in total offense. How do you explain that?

That he is good at designing a productive offense. Doesn't make him a good QB developer.

Uh, no.

Sumlin recruited neither Keenum nor Manziel. Keenum was brought in by Art Briles/Dana Holgorsen, Manziel by Mike Sherman. He inherited Briles' system in Houston and then brought Kingsbury, a Briles hire, to TAMU with him

This season will actually be a first for Sumlin in that he is captaining the ship of an offense with a QB that he recruited plus and an OC he hired all by himself.

"Uh, no" yourself. Both Holgorsen and Kingsbury came to Houston with Sumlin in 2008. He hired both of them "all by himself".

You're correct that Sumlin recruited neither Keenum nor Manziel, but Manziel never took a snap under Sherman, and wasn't thought to even be leading for the starting job in 2012 until fall camp. And Keenum split time w/ another QB his only year under Briles. Keenum had a 14-10 TD:INT ratio under Briles, and a 44:11 ratio the next year w/ Sumlin.

And finally, Briles runs a spread, but it isn't the Air Raid, so no, Sumlin didn't "inherit" his system.

Other than that, you were pretty spot on.

Early in the 2002 season, Slocum promoted Sumlin to offensive play-caller (a promotion from WR coach) after the Aggie offense struggled in the first three games of the season. With Sumlin calling the plays, the Aggie offense flourished, averaging 33.0 points and 419 yards per game for the remainder of the season after posting just 16.0 points and 286 yards per game previously. A highlight of the season including a 30-26 win over top-ranked Oklahoma with the Aggies gaining 404 total yards to key the victory.

That OU win, by the way, was keyed by true freshman QB Reggie McNeal tossing 4 TDs.

We'll never know what Sumlin could have done w/ Reggie, because Slocum was fired that year and Sumlin moved on to OU.

Technically this will also be a Mike Sherman offensive line.

somewhat, I know Ifedi was a MU commit until Sherman/AGGIE offered him.

Still Sherman players on the team but it's clearly Sumlins product now, it's not like Sumlin hasn't been able to recruit since taking over.

Does Aggie have the best O-line in the SEC?

Certainly possible.

yea. Greene was a 3* type. What's you're point?

Think Mason was a 3 star, also. Of course, the jury's still out on how he's developed. We will begin to know in about 26 hours.

And yes, Richt/Bobo would have to be at the top of such a list.
