No, I am just really interested in the effects a more egalitarian distribution of exposure has had on college football.

In many ways A&M has benefited more than any program in the nation from a shift to local talent and equal exposure (once we joined SEC and got equal exposure).

So I have paid attention to the reasons for this shift, and the programs on the losing end like Tenn and Nebraska.

Some fans of some teams were saying the same thing about my beloved Bama Football before 2007. There is just too much passion for Tennessee to succeed for them to stay down forever. They'll be back man.

Only thing Florida is responsible for is losing to Miami. Weak arse program.

Neither of your last 2 coaches could manage a winning record against our weak arse program. I guess Saban and Miles are just shitty coaches.

Tennessee shouldn't have had to play LSU twice in 2001.

No. This is a multi tiered answer.
1. The decision to let a coach go
that won nearly 80% of his games.

2. The decision to hire Lane.

3. The decision to hire Dooley.

Was Gerogia's dominance over Florida for half a century the reason for Florida's demise for half a century?
No. The wrong coach and wrong administration calling shots is the answer to why a program has a dramatic fall.

The point of my rambling is that ut would not be in this position if Phil was still in charge

What makes you say this? Tennessee has three losing seasons in the last four years, only one more than we had in Fulmer's final four years.

Bama fans feel everything is about coaching because its about coaching to Bama. Bama has enough talent in state and is a big enough national brand that all you need is competency.

But I hate to tell you, your rival best buddy Tennessee doesn't have those advantages and 18 year old kids don't give a shite how much they dominated the SEC before they were born. They need to sell sexy not houndstooth.

Tennessee, unlike Bama, needs a coach that can sell sexy. A coach that can control the message and the media as much as the offensive line in order to win. Butch has shown he can do that so far, but we will see going forward how he handles initial adversity.

You are talking about an era before TV, before ESPN2. It was a different game then.

I know Bama fans like to look at things with a 100 year lens, but the reality is that football has changed more in the past 20 years with media deals, realignment, and lots of money than in the 50 years prior to that.

The world is different and Tenn has to survive in that reality.

how dare you openly disparage the SEC like this. you know damn good and well Saban made 'em quit. now sit down and shut up. florida has no business opining about the SEC due to second tier status in said conference. next thing you know, your fans will be bitching about the schedule.

You're crazy. Kids love that awful Orange and like them or not, Tenn puts on a damn good show in Neyland.

The only thing keeping them down lately are the poor coaching hires.

Fulmer was done and needed to go. He was on a steady decline for half a decade.

The biggest mistake was Kiffin. Dooley just wasn't ready for a rebuilding job.

Butch might do ok, but I kind of think it will take someone else to turn it around; a big time proven coach that the recruits believe will be successful before you see UT competing for the east again.

Only problem with your thesis is that Tennessee's ability to recruit has not taken a hit even with this massive change you are describing.

Fulmer was recruiting just fine after this major landscape change. Kiffin recruited at an elite level. Hell, even Dooley was able to recruit at a top ten level before it became painfully obvious he was done for.

Now, Butch has a class that will finish top 7 at worst.

The fact of the matter is that Tennessee is having no problem getting elite players on campus. Developing them and keeping them here is where we've gone wrong.
