That was right when D - Mase started.

Remember when Saban first started at LSU? Lost to UAB at HOME!

Remember when Saban first started at Bama? Lost to La-Monroe at HOME

Building something is not for the faint of heart. Takes a lot of guts, glory and learning from mistakes.

smart, muschamp, stoops and mcelwain are better than mason. argument can be made for butch (which says more about butch than mason). only mizzou's coach is clearly worse.

What's your standard to say these other coaches are better? I doubt Vandy even has 60-65 players on their team b/c of their academic standards. Give Mason the resources the coaches have you say or better than he is and I bet he at least has a similar record to theirs. Look at what James Franklin is doing at a program with big resources.

while mason has vandy going in the right direction, he didn't prove he's better than those coaches by beating a mediocre big 12 team. we can reevaluate depending on how vandy does in conference play this year.

Let this sink in:

He has the top defense in the NATION and 4th best QB by QBR.

You seemingly know nothing about the limited recruiting pool and roster management football coaches at elite academic universities experience.

Okay, let's not act like Vandy's players are chopped liver. We have some really high quality players. The key is finding guys who can meet admission requirements and are being overlooked by other teams. Often, they're guys from smaller high schools or are just overshadowed by teammates but that can still play the game. They may need a year or three to develop into useful players, but there's a lot of talent on the field. Mason and company are doing a great job identifying and developing talent, but they aren't working with nothing either. Of course, talent identification and development is a big part of being a good coach.

I agree. I'm an LSU alum; a proud one at that. But, gaining admittance to Vandy is way different than being admitted to LSU even for athletes.
