1969 1 Owens 2 Phipps 3 Kern 4 Manning

Was SEC player of the year in 69. Played 71 in an arm cast.

Can you give me any facts why he is such a great figure by Ole Miss fans. What record did Manziel break? Got any facts or stats.

4th in Heisman vote

I don’t really have a dog in this fight but if anything, this kind of supports OP’s argument. I can show you a hell of a lot of 4th place Heisman finishers that don’t become the entire identity of their programs for 50 years after leaving the program.

One of his greatest, most talked about games is a loss against Alabama.

That's the most Ole Miss thing ever.

He was twice in the top four of the voting though. And was likely the odds on favorite to win it his senior year before breaking his arm.

Your entire fanbase lost its collective mind when Saban tried to give Cam a compliment by telling someone in the NFL (Elway I think it was) that Cam single-handely made that team. Weird seeing y’all embrace that now.

How many 4th place heisman finishers got drafted 2md overall and set records that stood for 40 years?

He didn't play in their loss to State in 1970. He was not on Ole Miss' punt team that gave up 3 tds vs LSU.

Like saying Pete Maravich was overrated. Great players, sucky teams. One man can't do it all in team sports. Manning was running for his life most of his career.

Ole Miss went 10-2 the year after he left? Were they really that terrible?

What an odd lie for you to make up.

Why are you Gump obsessed with giving Saban credit for everything? Like the lie about Saban wanting more SEC games.

I don’t know, you tell me. Look man I’m not trashing Archie- always liked the guy. He was before my time and I think it’s really hard to understand the impact of a player when you didn’t live through their era. ALL I’m saying is the argument that other poster made doesn’t really prove anything and in fact could be used in an argument against Archie’s greatness.

Take away those 3 tds and LSU still wins 41-17.

There’s plenty of evidence that the college football community as a whole thought he was one of the games best players of that era. I was not born yet and I rely entirely on the opinions of fans of other schools that actually watched him play. I live in LSU country and my best friend is a Razorback that was in high school then. They almost unanimously think he was even better than how he is perceived.

Most big time schools great players win some kind of championships. But Ole Miss considers him great on a loss to Alabama in 1969 and finishing mid pack in the SEC. If he was say an Alabama QB with his record he would be thought of as average or terrible.
