I honestly could not name for you a single recruit off the top of my head. I know the running back from Kentucky and I know we got a QB from California and a receiver from Florida that are all supposed to be five star guys but I do not know a single one of their names. The only reason I am even aware of them is because of Twitter and when they committed.

I don't know what the defines an old timer? I was taught cursive in English class and took in the sporting news by regular mail every week before the matrix existed.

I don't have a vested interest in every recruit that UGA pulls in outside the small group of local kids I know who play HS ball in my area which I see on Friday nights in the fall.

Grown men spend hours each day reading what a high school kid puts on twitter. And, those same high school kids become more and more like drama queens each day in their recruitment as a result, flipping back and forth for attention.

For me it's good enough to know that we have a top 20 recruiting class every year and I will learn the new players names as they assume starting positions.

I also don't have anything against people who dive all into it either younger people and maybe some retired people with time on their hands it fills a void in their lives.

You give a 17 year old debutante camera time and lay accolades at her feet and she will turn into the biggest diva you have ever seen with a quickness...

We didn't have message boards to discuss football and other topics back in the day either. Looks like you got over your disdain for modern day social gatherings.

The Twitter stuff with recruiting is an abomination.

Old guys following every single tweet from a kid and having a knee jerk reaction is pathetic.

I won't even follow a current Alabama player much less a recruit. Its just creepy.

Agree with a lot of that, but I am pointing out that social media is the reason for the big change.

I don't really get into recruiting at all. I get excited close to NSD and just look at all the stars we (hopefully) got.

It's combination of seeing too many 4- 5-stars not pan out, and then seeing 2-3 stars get taken in the first round. But also its creepy as hell and as you get older you realize how petty the games played/attention are.

Wow.. couldn't have said it better myself. If anyone thinks an 17 r 18 year old kid holds the key to success for a major University over the next few years... I can't help but think how fricking sad that is.

I'm not an old timer - but do remeber the days when Auburn fans accused us Bammers of "star gazing" once Saban came to Bama. They loved how Tubberville could take "diamonds in the rough" and beat Bammer with 'em. Those were the good ole days when Aubs didn't give a shite about recruiting.

I think this effect is overstated. I follow recruiting, but I care WAY more about certain positions than others. With some positions it is easier to spot the top talent- you can't learn size or speed.

For example, outside of Mizzou no one in the SEC has an elite D line without elite talent. So I follow D line recruiting more than say TE. We get a D line commit, or even just give one an offer, and I will watch some video. The reason is because Oregon's two national title losses showed everyone how much D line talent can be a glass ceiling.

You can thank ESPN for a lot of the nonsense by airing high school football, promoting teenagers, and by convincing kids to wait to announce until during a game they air.

ESPN is slimy just like our conference HQ.

NSD came, players signed, they all showed up to campus in August in new vehicles, and two-a-days began.

So very little has changed.

For me it's something to keep me occupied between bowl season and march madness. Not much else going on in the sports world. It's fun trying to guess which players will really stand out then seeing them step into that role, and then it's even more fun to watch them do well in the NFL. OBJ, Landry, and Hill were all like that this year. The twitter stuff is creepy though.

As far as the mental games they play, if they knew there weren't people out there who hung on their every word/thought on social media, there wouldn't be so many games. A lot of it is the kid just enjoying himself. Can't say I'd be any different with that much attention at that age. And plenty of huge prospects do it the right and humble way.

The site claims that it's supposed to show recruits which fanbases want them most weird as shite if you ask me.

And they have a convoluted way of dealing with the money, they give a certain percent to the school but if they can't get it to the school they can essentially decide another organization of their choosing.

Looking into it, multiple schools have already cut ties with them. Clemson lawyer sent Ubooster a cease and desist to "immediately refrain from purportedly raising funds on behalf of Clemson University directly or indirectly."

Tennessee has done the same. Hopefully more will follow suit.

That was a great move by UT. I don't think there's a more recruiting obsessed fanbase out there (maybe some that equal our obsession with it but I'd be surprised if any surpassed it). Add in that we're one of the more active on social media and UT related websites and that site would've robbed fans blind (all it's designed to do is make money off the cut for the owners of the site) and complicated the question of who is a booster. Making more people/regular fans and even non-fans into NCAA defined boosters would create a nightmare in terms of compliance.

And of course, it just adds more sickness/corruption to the current climate of recruiting which is bad enough as it is.
