In the late 50's and early 60's SEC had a limit of 145 total

for football and basketball. So this talk of schools signing 75 a year is lies.
Now days it's 85. Back in those days BB was given 18-20 leaving 125 for football divided by 4 years is 31.25 . Freshmen were not able to play so that leaves 93.75 for varsity . I heard Bill Oliver say this at a Alabama function a few years ago . So this dream of Bryant having 250 on the team is BS. He was just better.

I have read he would sign 60 plus a year.

So football teams had 40 more scholarships than available now. Don't really see what "rumor" you think you're dispelling. There was also no limit per year, so dividing 125 by 4 is basically irrelevant. If Houston Nutt could sign 40 guys 5 or so years ago with only 85 to work with, coaches in the 50s could get plenty creative each year with 125

It doesn't really matter because every other team could sign just as many. So that excuse from other team's fans has always been pure jealousy.

It dispels the rumor that he operated with no scholarship limitations. FWIW, the limitation was 140 rather than 145. And the rumor was particularly troubling whenever Bama played OOC because this was an SEC rule. Therefore, in those cases it was the opposing coach that was operating with no limitations while he was under the "140 Rule".
