Kinda thought this place was reasonably civil. Seems like all it is missing is its own Randolph Duke.
Is the downvote thing something I should worry about, or just hazing the new guy?

I think it's a little bit of both. I would say they know you are new and know you haven't followed the proper protocol by introducing yourself to the OT board.
So, until you do that, expect the same treatment.
