The only parallel I can think of that comes close to this amount of blind worship of a player. Is Jimmer Fredette who played basketball for BYU. But the worship had a whole lot to do with the fact that he was a Mormon savior/hero in their eyes who played at their holy Mormon school.

Jimmer never earned anyone's ire, although like Johnny did at one point he claimed he couldn't go to class because of the student-fame, but if Jimmer had earned media ire through his own actions his hero-worshipping school and fans would've reacted the same.

Other than that I can't think of any other example of such nonsense.
