Most of the QB playing the rather new NFL back in the late 1950s through middle sixties had front teeth missing and had suffered major breaks of appendages....especially if they were hit by Andy Robistelli. Andy might chew on that leg or arm for while. Watch Sam Huff back in the day, or Ray Nietzcke (sp) if you could stomach the blood.
After Joe Willie made the AFL/NFL aware of all the TV sets that would tune in to games (complete w/rabbit ears)if the star QB wasn't carried off on a stretcher....they started protecting players. YA Tittle (LSU), Bart Starr (Bama)and Frank Gifford(wr/rb)took the brunt early on...Of course there was a pretty boy Neuter Dame RB who other players were not thrilled with who was a Heisman winner and didn't have a hair out of place back then.
