Well technically we weren't.
We didn't become "The University of South Carolina" (that we are today) until 1906. We were South Carolina College before that.

Well, if you want to be "technical", The University of South Carolina was re-organized several times during the post-Civil War Reconstruction Era. The actual FIRST organization as "The University of South Carolina" took place in 1866. The FINAL charter as University of South Carolina was in 1906.....
