Thanks! But did you read the entire section of verses and not just the one small section? You can't take them out of context, and you must understand the background and history of what is going on. In Matthew, Jesus was talking to the Pharisees. They were criticizing Jesus and his disciples for not following Jewish tradition. The verse, or law that Jesus is referring to is back in the old testament. (See the Mark 7:10 verse you alluded to) The beginning of the quote in Mark clearly says that Moses said this.

Jesus was telling the Pharisees that they were preoccupied with keeping their traditions and not with keeping God's law. He was NOT advocating that we should kill children for disobeying their parents, rather that we should be more concerned with keeping God's commandments.

Now, Jesus was there to create a new covenant. We are no longer bound by the law, but are under grace. (However, the Parisees would not have understood this, because they did not accept Jesus as the Messiah, so Jesus had to use an example (Moses' law) that they would understand)

In both instances, this was referring to old testament law rather than new testament grace, or the new covenant. I know this is confusing, but I THINK I can find a link that might explain it more clearly if you would like.

You're really dancing around this one. He called you out hard and you were wrong. Go figure.

Well, I will readily admit that I am not a Bible scholar. However, from what I have read and what i see this is what I believe these verses to mean. You have to look at the character of God to fully understand. And, you have to have an open mind. I find it ironic that the very people that accuse Christians of being close minded approach the Bible with that very same close mindedness they accuse others of having.

Here is another link to one commentary on what jesus was actually saying:

In cas eyou don't want to read the whole thing, or may not fully understand what it is talking about...

The Pharisees were teaching that adults with parents that were needy should give their money to the church and not put it to help the parents. (Feed, house, etc) Jesus was pointing out that the law says they should honor their parents. (Keep in mind that when he is talking about parents he is not talking only to children, but to adults, as well) The Pharisees were chastising Jesus and His disciples for not washing their hands before eating. (This was a ritualistic cleansing, more than hygiene) He was pointing out that the cleansing was ritualistic and not of law, but obeying your parents was Jewish law, given by Moses.
