I didn't care. I was too busy studying. Rich rod. I didn't follow it closely. I mentioned Saban to my roommate and he laughed me back to my room.
I must've told an hilarious joke
You damn sure weren't studying English.

Lou Tepper was one name being prominently bandied about.

As a 54 yr old lifetime Bama fan,I was about getting used to settling for Coaches.
The powers that be at Bama pissed off Gene Stallings into semi early retirement.
Then there was Dubose,Francione, the Mike Price"it's Rolling Baby"debacle.
Then stability and mediocrity with Mike Shula.
For a while it seemed like Mal Moore was traveling around with a job nobody wanted.Rich Rodriquez turned it down.Thank God.
Nick Saban erased all that in 1 year.

David Cutcliffe wanted the job, and from reports would have landed Alabama Jimmy Clausen.

It is still my thoughts that someone within the Alabama family contacted Finebaum and had him discredit Coach Rodriguez or his family or do whatever was necessary to have him change his mind about coming to Alabama. The inside workings of the Bama athletic department knew Coach Saban was coming, but first they had to rid themselves of Coach Rodriguez.
For this reason they should erect a statue of Finebaum outside BDS along with the coaches. Finebaum saved the Alabama football program.
I've never heard so much as a rumble of this happening, but if it did they don't need to erect a statue of Finebaum outside the stadium, they need to add his name to the place.

RichRod is what I was hearing, heard rumors about Saban, but did not believe that would happen. Very happy I was wrong.

I think he would have been a 10 win type coach, but nothing close to what we have now.

Mostly Rich Rod and a little bit of Petrino.

I didn't for one second mean to imply that he'd be anywhere close to what Bama has now, only that he'd have been a significant upgrade over Shula and better than any of the other names mentioned outside of Saban. I also agree he'd have been a 10 game winner with an occasional SECCG thrown in here and there.

Mal was after Saban, he got a call from his agent who said there was a chance he wanted back to college football. They did the kibouki dance for awhile. Someone on the board of trustees got cold feet and Rich Rod came into the picture.
That someone was Mal. He'd not heard from Sexton in over a week and started to worry about the recruiting class. He continued down the path he had begun with Rich Rod and got close to a deal. It was agreed to in principle and it was not supposed to get out. Somehow it did and that had two consequences:
1) Rich Rod was pissed as he'd not yet talked to his team/school
2) Sexton called Mal to ask wtf. Mal said he was worried about the recruiting class and Sexton told him (rather prophetically) "if you will wait a few weeks you'll never have to worry about a recruiting class again" (or so one side of the story goes).
Rich Rod and Mal never talked again between the story leaking/Rich Rod's denial and Saban becoming the Bama coach.
Also, I felt it was going to happen for sure when Chris Mortensen said on the Dan Patrick show on 12/23/2006 when asked about Saban to Bama (and Dan was incredulous saying no way), Mort said, "if Bama doesn't have a coach in place by the time the Dolphins season ends, I think Nick Saban will be their next coach". Mort knew.

Yeah lotta Gumps like to kid themselves that Coach Moore had this grand conspiracy to pretend to hire RR and really go after Saban. Fact is Coach Moore got extremely lucky both that RR backed out and Saban was interested

Rich Rodriguez was supposedly "the guy" at one point. ESPN even ran a story about it. Thank God, his wife Rita hated Paul Finebaum and talked Rich into staying at West Virginia.

I would almost bet 75% or more of the Bama fan base on this board haven't been bama fans for 10 years. One day some tard of theirs trying to defend his "football school", in an attempted flame toward a Tennessee guy that was actually complimenting their players pre saban said "who the f*** is Glen coffee and kenneth darby?" Thinking those guys had played for Tennessee. He quickly edited it.

Not sure how "inside" you're talking about, but I knew a guy at the time that worked in that athletic office for the football team. He told me all along Saban was who Mal wanted, but there were some powers that didn't think he could get Saban, and that's when Rich Rodriguez entered the picture. In essence they scared Mal into offering Rich Rod the job. It's possible the ones that wanted Saban sabotaged the Rodriguez deal. I do know for a fact that Rodriguez's agent or attorney was in the athletic offices the day after it was leaked he had agreed to the deal.
There's also the theory that those that wanted RichRod only wanted him so they could retain some of the access they had to the football program, something they feared Saban would limit if he was to be hired.

No, it was supposedly others on the search committee (a trustee, or a group of them actually). Mal was willing to wait for Saban, but some on the board got really nervous, especially when Saban was telling the media there was no way he was leaving. So Mal buckled, and went after RR.

Excellent analysis. That is exactly as it went down.
Glad we got Saban, appreciate and enjoy all it has meant.
