I'm just going to say not just football, but all sports and even in the professional world.

I prefer to work for assholes.

Just motivates me more.

Someone that's nice I tend to walk all over.

My high school coaches competed to see which one could be the most sadistic, mean SOB on the staff. They were like marine drill sergeants. If my dad knew all of the shite that went on he would have made me quit. My coaches would face multiple lawsuits in today’s world.

Have you even seen one Saban press conference?

I have. If you're not going in predisposed to think he's an a-hole, I think it's pretty obvious that, more than anything, he's just straightforward and honest. He'll go off on stupid questions (or questions he considers stupid, anyway) and get impatient over this sort of thing, but one thing that's obvious is that he's just as willing to be complimentary as he is to be blunt. The guy seriously doesn't go out of his way to be nasty. What he says might rub some people the wrong way but I've yet to see him say anything that seemed like that was his intention.

I find it refreshing, honestly. Someone who can be blunt without coming across as malicious or deliberately insensitive is pretty rare.

Did you read my post where I talked about his press conferences

If you want me to go further, Saban never makes backhanded comments about his own players, opposing players, opposing coaches, or opposing teams/programs. He may be a little blunt for some people's liking and has little patience for members of the media who ask him questions he thinks are stupid. But when talking about others, he is generally very respectful

My HS in 64/65 was a Co-Captain of Coach Bryant's 1958 Alabama team. No water until practice was over. Tuff guy and our assistant was much more tuff. He played two years a Holmes Juco and then on to Delta State. He was just mean and we loved him. Shet was different. Went to Livingston in 68 with Coach Morris Higgenboatham and he was really tuff. Mickey Andrews and Charlie Stephens were assistant coaches and both were on the 64 Bama NC team. Things were just different then. Players were different.

Head coach was an area great who genuinely cared about his players. Position Coaches and Strength guy could be assholes, but his view was always that being an a-hole for short term gains on the field would only serve to warp the view of leadership in the young men he was teaching.

My HS coach my freshman, sophomore and junior year was older, coached us in a state championship, and was just very father like, very wise. My senior year we got a young guy, too young, and even he’ll admit today that he did some dumb young things coaching what should have been a state championship team. He didn’t last long, the old coach came out of retirement and won another state championship six years later. Young coach became a helluva golf coach.

College ... I was the dumbass and deserved losing my chance. Loved my coach, HC and position coach ... HC died a few years ago. We got to be friends. He was a good guy.

My coach in Milano, Italy was hardcore old school. Mr. (Georgio ) Armani was the team owner and when he hired Coach T he was looking for someone who had experience in the college ranks and pro ranks in America. Back then the teams over there had to have X number of players born in Europe and only so many Americans. So there was a clash of cultures at times and Coach T would lose his mind. My position coach was a UGA guy and he would try to shelter us from a lot of the craziness but all we cared about was playing ball. We won a bunch of games but T was always handing out fines and holding late night or early morning practices and it took the fun outta the game.

I suffered a compression fracture in Naples but didn’t realize it at the time (one of those neck shoved down between your shoulder blades crown to crown hits on a draw play I’ll never forget - thought I had broken my neck even then) but I got up and played ... and the next week I went down with a bad stinger in Berlin and they sent me to a spine and neck specialist in Lyon ... and that was it. Said I was lucky I didn’t sheer away the vertebrae. I came home and went to BHam for surgery. Coach T flew all the way over to see me when I was in recovery. Brought me some bling from the All-Star game I missed ... jacket and stuff. He couldn’t have been nicer that day. But man was he a fricking bastard on the field.

He’s still alive and in his 90s. I’m friends with him on Facebook.

Same LBs coach was great, head coach and DC would rip your head off if you made one mistake (I.e. getting crack-blocked by a WR and missing your contain on 1 play).

I played for both. Head coach was demanding, motivational, great role model and devout Christian. One Assistant was an a-hole who was successful as a father and professional and did great in life except his first wife cheated oh him and they divorced.
Another assistant was a great role model, Christian, but also tolerated our youthful indiscretions. My favorite by far to this day.

Football coaches need to be stern and strict. Having coached, its important to do everything for a reason. If you are yelling at a player, calling him out, etc. is it to make a point? Is it to teach him some humility? Does he need more motivation?

There are plenty of good reasons to yell, call out, etc to players. If you are yelling at a player that has a good attitude that made a mistake because of your lack of instruction, you are a bad coach.

I didn't make a catch once and my coach had me strapped down to 3/4" plyboard, stripped down and bullwhipped.

Then I was waterboarded for 2 hours, forced to walk on hot coals and kicked in the nuts by every team member.

Finally I was thrown in a pen with 4 pitbulls and savagely bitten all over.

Other than that he was a great guy. One of the nicest and most caring coaches I ever had.

Coach Bradshaw was a mean SOB. Meanest man i ever met in my life, but he meant the best and taught us respect and discipline. Bastrop went 49-0 when i was in high school and won 3 championships in a row my first 3 years.
