Saban only wins when his team overwhelms the opposition with severe talent advantages.

Like when he crushed #4 Penn State in 1997 by a score of 49-14 or that time he upset #1 Ohio State at their own house in 1998? Or how about his 31-20 upset win over #2 Tennessee in 2001?

Really the question is, does Jim's great years in the NFL/Stanford mean he deserves to be paid more than a man with four National Titles?

A person deserves to earn whatever they negotiate with their employer. Whether he deserves it or not is another matter and one that will display itself in time.

The question is does Saban seek an increase because he feels no one deserves to be paid more in CFB than himself?

He won more BCS titles than any other coach. If he wins the first playoff too, in what looked like a rebuilding season, he absolutely deserves to remain the highest paid coach. Even if that includes topping the rumored pay that Michigan is willing to use on Harbaugh.

The question is what a coach deserves. Name a coach that deserves to be paid more than Saban. We'll wait.

Any coach that has a school willing to pay him more than Saban deserves it.

Its the market. You have to go on it to get a raise. I could see Saban putting out feelers through his agent so he can renegotiate his deal.

Not sure how this is positive in any way for Alabama, though.

The answer to your question is no.

Jim Harbaugh's compensation does nothing to change whether or not Saban "deserves" a raise.

That being said, I think Saban is substantially underpaid.

In response to people who think 7MM is a ton of money and therefore Sabana is overpaid. Yes, the world is saying that if you're making 70K, Saban is 100 times more valuable than you.

Only if you're a football coach making 70k is this really applicable

He currently makes around $7mill. Is Harbaugh more deserving of the higher salary because of his success in the NFL?

Absolutely not, he still has yet to win a championship in college or the NFL. Get Saban a raise now.

It is a complete apples to oranges comparison. As a civil engineer in the transportation industry, Nick Saban could not do my job with any amount of success. But I couldn't do his either. Regardless, his decisions have the ability to make an impact far beyond his job. That goes for any head coach in the college and NFL game. As long as people have an interest in sports, coaches and athletes are going to get their cut.

I don't like that analogy really.

My problem in general is that College football is suppose to be an amateur sport. Saban shouldn't be making 7 million dollars in amateur sport to begin with. If you want to make 7-8 million as a coach then go to the NFL. At 8 million dollars, you are making more money than Bill Belichick. No offense to Saban, but its much harder to win in the NFL consistently than it is in college.

Amateurism isn't about how much you are worth

Pecking order of Salaries

NFL Level
College Level
Highschool Level
Pee Wee league

I have no problem with the top College coaches making about the same as the lowest NFL salaries.
