I made that mistake when I was in Seattle a few years ago. I'm 99% sure the gumbo was straight from a campbell's can.

Protip: only eat and make your own gumbo, its not that hard or expensive.

Go buy 5 lbs. of shrimp,2 pints of crabmeat, a lb. of crawfish tails, and a pack of gumbo crabs for stock and without the other ingredients you're still north of $75. True, if you're sluming or don't like seafood you can do a chicken and sausage gumbo for $25.

Gumbo literally means okra. If you haven't had okra in gumbo you haven't had gumbo.

Oh you'd like it now. It's basically the same except everything is made out of meth.

There's a place on Beale St. in Memphis with a sign that states "Award Winning Gumbo." They also spelled Parish with two Rs. When they brought the gumbo out to my wife you could almost see the bottom of the bowl through the broth concoction they pass off as gumbo. It was essentially chicken noodle soup with shrimp.

On the subject of gumbo in states not named Louisiana, my buddy who is working in Portland said that he ate some of the best gumbo he's ever had at a restaurant there. He has eaten his fare share of Louisiana gumbo too.

The world has gotten so small and well traveled it is possible, although rare,to have a fantastic version of a food outside of its traditional area of expertise.
