Well, as we all know one doesn't have to win the conference to win the NC.

Anyway this really is the best display of twisted Auburn logic one can find on this subject, thanks for posting again. Use the retroactive argument to eliminate most of the first six, then retroactively eliminate most of the last 6 that were clearly won with the system in place at the time. It takes an advanced level of derangement to buy into this one. At least Chicken's is consistent.

This is so fricking stupid and it keeps coming up. One example:

quote:

1978 National Championship- AP gives this to Alabama(11-1-0) even though USC (12-1-0) had the better record Guess who Alabama lost to that year? USC!!!!!!!!!. UPI gave the NC to USC

Yes, USC beat Bama in the regular season but USC lost to an unranked Arizona State team. Bama went on to beat #1 Penn State in the Sugar Bowl and was awarded the AP Natty Champ. So how is this not legitimate? I mean you could do this for all of them save 1941. Why are people so obsessed with this?

'41 is just gravy to make up for the prejudice and vote-hosing in '45, '66, '77, etc. See below

LINK

"In addition to the championships claimed by the university, the NCAA lists Alabama as receiving a championship for the 1945, 1966, 1975, and 1977 college football seasons,[7][86] however those championships are not claimed by Alabama.

"Since World War II, Alabama only claims national championships awarded by the final AP Poll or the final Coaches' Poll. This policy is consistent with other FBS football programs with numerous national title claims, including Notre Dame, USC, and Oklahoma. All national championships claimed by the University of Alabama were published in nationally-syndicated newspapers and magazines, and each of the national championship selectors, listed below, is cited in the Official 2010 NCAA FBS Record Book.[90]"

Interesting article...while based on facts, he conveniently left out some pertinent info, particularly concerning the claimed titles of the '60s & '70s...

1925, 1926, 1930, 1934: I don't see a real problem with claiming the early ones...there weren't the standardized polls of today; they were undefeated, won (or tied in '26) the most prominent bowl game (and in all years 'cept for '34, I think the only bowl game)...and in all of these, Bama claims a share not an outright title...

1941: Absolutely agree, this one's a joke and it's an embarrassment that we even claim this one; we should renounce it...I think claiming this one is the main reason we catch so much grief for claiming imaginary national championships...

1964: Based on today's standards, this wouldn't have been a title but both the UP & AP awarded titles before bowl games (back then bowl games were seen more as an award than an extension of the season). I don't think it's illegitimate since there were many titles that other schools claim (not just Bama) where they lost their bowl games. Here are a few that come to mind:

1950 Oklahoma (lost to a Bear Bryant coached Kentucky team in the Sugar Bowl, #1 AP/UPI)
1951 Tennessee (lost to Maryland in the Sugar Bowl, #1 AP/UPI)
1953 Maryland (lost to Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, #1 AP/UPI)
1960 Minnesota (lost to Washington in the Rose Bowl, finished with 2 losses, #1 AP/UPI)
1965 Michigan State (lost to UCLA in the Rose Bowl, #1 UPI)
1970 Texas (lost to Notre Dame in the Cotton Bowl, #1 UPI)

There may be others but I'm not sure...

1965: All the teams that he listed as having better records than Bama LOST their bowl games...and one of those listed, Nebraska, was beaten by Bama in the Orange Bowl. He contradicts himself here; he mentions in '64 that Bama's claim is not legit due to them losing their bowl game and then states that '65 isn't legit even though Bama won their bowl game while the teams with better records lost their's...even so this was a shared title with Michigan State...

1973: While his argument against this one is valid, the UPI was still awarded before bowls, similar to the situations listed above ('50, '51', '53, '60, '65, & '70)...

1978: Yes Bama lost to USC that year, but USC later lost to an unranked Arizona State team by 2 TD's and fell in the polls...Bama was ranked #2 goin' into the bowls and beat #1 Penn State...where else should they have finished? Even so this title was shared as USC still jumped 'em in the UPI poll...

The 1941 claim should be thrown out by any standard and, if judging by today's standard alone, you'd have to toss out '64 and '73; but if you do, would all the other schools listed above toss out their claims as well? Of all the rest of Bama's claimed championships, valid arguments can be made in claiming them...

And if Bama really claims every imaginary championship possible, I don't why they don't claim '66 or '77...and maybe '45 even though I think '45 Army would've kicked our butt...
