Even with my team at the highest level right now, I struggle to get into it. The best technique I've found is to pay attention to each individual and learn about their stats, performance and strengths/weaknesses, either by listening to the announcers or checking them out in turn on the Internet. That gives me mental busywork while I sit and grow bored with the pace of the game.

Try to understand the game, every pitch of it. And yes, drinking beer while watching enhances the entertainment.
