Even with UT's apathy towards baseball, I doubt Serrano survives the season.

well it is the last year on his contract. if there wasn't that apathy towards baseball, he would have been fired by now. thought they were turning things around this year, but you're not going to win many SEC series when you only have one pitcher

I just don't think we'll ever care enough about baseball to get a top notch coach.
Serrano was supposed to be a big time hire. So that's caring. It just hasn't worked out the way it was supposed to.

I think this is the most important point. He just hasn't been able to sign that many good arms.

As was already mentioned, he will probably go back out to CA and do fine because he can recruit the pitching and play small ball out there.

I thought Serrano was a highly touted guy with a good resume? Everyone was high on the hire at the time. Is is just a bad fit?

His philosophy of west coast small ball hasn't translated well in the SEC. Plus at UC-Irvine and Cal State he just needed a tank of gas to recruit. We've also had some bad luck with injuries this season.

Also people don't realize how much Corbin's Vanderbilt program is strangling UT on in state recruiting. He has the midstate on lock down and is also snagging his fair share of elite East Tennessee players. We only have 12.8 schollys to work with, whereas Vandy has 30 full rides to give out each year through their financial aid. If Vandy wants a kid instate, they get him unless the kid grew up a UT fan dreaming of wearing orange. As much as I hate to admit it, Vanderbilt has found its niche in baseball and puts us on an uneven playing field in trying to compete with them in that sport.

I mean, top to bottom, loaded.

Besides Tennessee you mean.

That's not offensive to 99% of UT fans. We know and accept we suck at that sport

psk answered, but to add, I don't think he is a bad coach, probably a bad fit like you suggested.

imo UT is, at best, a mediocre program in this league who might make a CWS every decade or so. Like others have said, the local populous just doesn't give a shite.

I am just glad we don't pretend like we have some high ceiling like Bama in basketball or Ole Miss in football.

I didn't think about Vandy swiping all the Tennessee talent. I just remember when Serrano was hired I thought he would turn it around or at least get out of the cellar.

They are getting who they want and UT is getting some of the scraps. Corbin is killing it and it obviously shows. Vandy has an excellent baseball program and I don't think it is going anywhere anytime soon.

And like lsufball said, Serrano has wasted time recruiting sure-fire MLB signees as well
