Funny thing is, and I seriously chuckled inside when I read your post ... is that even when MSU had a "national championship winning coach" in Jackie Sherrell, Miss State was still as mediocre as they had ever been - so there was no "going back."

Let's take a closer look, shall we?

Sherrill comes out of retirement to coach MSU and ends-up staying thirteen years. (Holtz came out of retirement and saved us in only five before handing the ball off to Spurrier.) In thirteen years Sherrill was 75-75-2 at MSU. Spurrier has been here only nine years and he already has more wins, (77-39), than Sherrill did in thirteen at MSU.

So let's see ... I mean since you decided to "seal the deal" when you entered this thread:

1 - Instead of "I think the Gamecocks go back to mediocrtrity" (sic) you meant to type "I hope and pray the Gamecocks return to mediocricy so my MSU bulldogs are not down here all alone .."

2 - Instead of asking the question "Spurrier is 68 years old ... who will be USCe's next coach" you meant to type, "Spurrier could outcoach Dan Mullin from the grave ... as could pretty-much any coach SCAR chooses to replace Spurrier when the time comes."

3 - Instead of typing "They've had two MNC winning coaches ... couldn't seal the deal," you meant to type, "damn, they've hired two consecutive MNC winning coaches who have combined to completely turn SCAR's football fortunes around. Spurrier is close to sealing the deal for the Gamecocks. After that they can hire with impunity, up and coming coaches everywhere will want to coach there to follow the Holtz/Spurrier legacy."

BTW, one last little Gamecock trivia tidbit. Holtz and Spurrier were not our first MNC coaches ... Paul Dietzel holds that honor. He was also the one that had the vision to get us out of the ACC and pointed in the direction of the SEC, a stated goal of his in 1972.

MaroonWhite ... given your interest in SCAR, have you ever stopped to wonder why SCAR's karma is so much better than MSU's. I mean, we long ago surpassed you in football. You endeavor to be a baseball school yet, well, look around ... you're way behind the curve.

Have you ever stopped and asked yourself what it is your collective program did to itself that earned it its place in perpetual mediocrity? I mean, well, just sayin' since you brought it up and all ... dumbass.

One last chuckle ... I can't wait 'till one or two of the good Vol fans sees your, "... go back to medioctrity (ala Tennessee post-Fulmer)," comment.

If we redefine "on top" to designate a team that has never won its conference, then I see no reason why they can't stay "on top" indefinitely.
