When talking title teams that lsu team was elite on offense not on defense. The defense was below average compared to the rest of the playoff champs. In a one of non con game this really carries less weight than you think it does

Scoring defense for the playoff era national champions
2022 Georgia - 14.3
2021 Georgia - 10.2
2020 Alabama - 19.4
2019 LSU - 21.3
2018 Clemson - 13.1
2017 Alabama - 11.9
2016 Clemson - 18.0
2015 Alabama - 15.1
2014 Ohio State - 22.0

You need to consider that LSU faced easily the toughest run of opponent QBs.

NFLSU/GAT/whoever else alter recycles material constantly. Seems to work every time too.

We beat Texas and we beat Ole Miss that year. I don’t know how many yards we gave up to either

The LSU defense made some clutch stops in 2019. They tightened up when they had to against Florida and Clemson. Their second halves in those games were great. However, the Tiger D also allowed some teams to hang around more than they should've (Ole Miss and Vandy come to mind). Their average points per game when totaling the SEC championship game and two playoff games was 21, which was right at their season average.

The original claim was LSU's 2019 defense was below average compared to other playoff teams, and it's true. It was clearly a step behind the Georgia defenses in 2022 and 2021, Clemson in 2018, Bama in 2017, and Bama in 2015. It is comparable to Alabama in 2020 and Clemson in 2016. It is probably better than the 2014 Ohio State defense if only for the tough schedule LSU played (they allowed similar points per game and yards per game).

That doesn't take anything away from LSU's season, of course.

Following up on this.

500+ yards given up in a single game in championship season
2022 Georgia - 1
2021 Georgia - 1
2020 Alabama - 1
2019 LSU - 3
2018 Clemson - 2
2017 Alabama - 0
2016 Clemson - 1
2015 Alabama - 1
2014 Ohio State - 1

Defense only gave up 24 to Vandy.

Now do: future NFL starting QBs faced in a championship season. (Pretty sure LSU is at 5 and counting).

Only? That was the most points Vandy scored against a P5 opponent all season (tied with another game against 4-8 Purdue). It was also their second highest yardage output against P5 team. Vandy averaged 9 points in all other SEC games but put up 24 on y'all.

That wasn't the Tiger D's best day.

In relation to 38.

Definitely not, they were missing several starters and lost at least Divinity during the game IIRC.

Injury bug bit 2019 LSU hard on the defense in the early and mid part of the season, luckily, the offense covered the warts.

Your defense didn't have to do much but they answered the call when necessary.

How many times has Texas been relevant this century? Other than the one year they beat the greatest team ever assembled…
