I think most would disagree that Knute was the greatest. I take nothing away from his impressive career, but he did coach in the "Ohio League"

The program was at an all time low, but it had been the dominant team of the 20s, 30s, and 40s. Bama put the SEC on the map. It was the first Southern team to play in the Rose Bowl (the only Bowl of the time) and shocked the world by winning. 2 years in a row.


Bama has always been the premier program of the SEC.

Circa 1958, Tennessee was unquestionably the premiere SEC and Southern football power up to that time.

ETA, I suppose anything is debatable, but a strong case could be made that it was Tennessee at that point in time. Alabama was clearly not what Alabama ended up becoming.

If he gets this one and then one more at Texas I don't think anybody could dispute it. It's hard to dispute it already.
