"How long would it take for TV money to destroy college football?"

"Maybe we're here", so says Washington State football HC, Jake Dickert.
“To think, even remotely, five years ago, [that] the Pac-12 would be in this position, it’s unthinkable to think that we’re here today. And to think that local rivalries are at risk … to me, is unbelievable.”
I'm afraid he's right.

Sounds like that guy could use a 7-minute morning chair workout.

CFB has died. People need to accept this is entirely a semi-pro sport now.

Well that was sort of the problem yes? The leadership of the conference and their enablers had zero foresight. They didn’t just get it wrong like the ACC, they were effectively negligent to fumble away the advantages they had at the beginning of realignment ~13 years ago.
Sucks that 4 schools pay the price, but I’m sure the SWC castaways 30ish years ago felt similar.

Anyone not seeing this coming especially in his role as a HC is naive at best.

Then if you truly feel that way, the SEC could walk away from ESPN and not take their money nor have televised games.
Would you like that? Come on and quit being dramatic. Without big TV money, you wouldn't have every game on TV, have great facilities, or be able to pay Kirby Smart's salary.

College football has always been controlled by money and there’s always been different conferences. Who gives a shite that the Pac12 does t exist anymore?

Apparently Frank Broyles was a visionary. He saw this coming in the 80’s and searched for a way to find security in a stable conference. We were fortunate to have him at that time.

My simple minded thoughts were always negative when the G5 were labeled D-1. There should be competitive tiers playing for championships. Not every school is the same nor should they sit at the same table, but money opportunities made it so. Go back to D1, D1-AA, D1-AAA, however I don’t believe smaller or irrelevant schools will agree to a loss in TV/ conference money.

This is true. I don’t get why this is shocking to anyone. There is a list a mile long of conferences that were absorbed over the years.

In major conferences it’s been semi-pro for 30 years. People big-mad players get 1099’s now rather than McDonald’s bags full of cash complain about schools/conferences doing what they’ve been doing for 30 years - chase cash.

Hindsight is 20/20.
This is a discussion for 10 years ago.

Current salary: $2.7 million per year.
He's part of the problem.
Just 20 years ago, Alabama hired Mike Shula and paid him $900,000 per year. I don't think there's a single P5 football program who'd be able to hire a head coach - regardless of the name - for that kind of salary in 2023.

Folks, take note, this is what an objective, pragamatic man/woman looks like.
It is dead as we have known it our entire lives.
Now ask why.
Not just fooseball but everything it makes me think of that scene from "Lawless"
YT Lawless 1 minute clip

I knew TV money would ruin the sport back when they started doing this.

Get the fricking media off the field/court. No coach wants to answer questions from a stupid arse journalist at halftime. He is a little busy right now.
He will answer questions after the game. Nobody cares what the halftime score is after the game, just the final score.
I know how much the coaches hate these interviews and if the networks could force them to do this, then they can pretty much do anything. Like splitting up conferences.
If you ever get confused about why something is the way it is, follow the money.

CFB as we free up with died.
New age where games times are 100% based on TV.
Basically we have player free agency.
Virtually unregulated NIL deals.
Full blown professional agents speaking with high school kids in 10th and 11th grade.
Talk of unionizing college football players.
It’s now a money arms race with only about 10-12 programs with almost unlimited resources when compared with other schools.
It’s a mess. Something akin to pro football will emerge. Lots of corporate tickets, lots more in stadium advertising,, more suites, die hard fans getting priced out of attending, etc…
If you like the new direction it is going then you will be happy. Stadium attendance at a lot of schools has been trending down for years. Not all, but quite a few. Normal seats being removed for suites that seat a lot less.

It's not gonna destroy college football. It may destroy what it once was. But let's be honest, it already was not what it once was.
