Have they trademarked the phrase "Terrible Towel" and sued the Pittsburgh Steelers yet?

Wiki says 1985. And it really took off in 1988 during the Cotton Bowl when one of our 12th man kickoff team(*) took Tim Brown's towel and waved it around.

(*) Jackie Sherrill created a kickoff team composed entirely of walkon players. And they didn't suck.

Since before you were born. Great atmosphere in the stadium. A&M does it right. Great atmosphere in the stadium. No bs outside the stadium. Howdy and gald you came to college station. A&M was the best move the SEC did in a long time.

'82 sounds right. I'm sure this came about during Sherrill's reign. Not there during this old dinosaur's time: '75-'79.

I am pretty sure it was '85. I don't recall any really before that. In '85 we lost an early game to Baylor and then went on a big winning streak that culminated in beating Texas for the SWC Championship and then going on to beat Auburn with Bo in the Cotton Bowl. The towels started showing up that year and became a phenomenon.

Here they are in '85:

This is really when it started. Walk ons from coverage team (10 of them + kicker) started doing it. The night game vs UT in College Station was actually the firt time they were really used across the stadium. Back then it was a big deal to have ESPN televise a game.

Was in 3rd deck and it was a great night.

For once, Wiki is right. The 12th Man kickoff team started a couple of years before that, but the towels didn't come around until several games into the '85 season, which was a breakout season for the team. Several players had been waiving towels to get the crowd into it on kickoffs, and some organization started selling towels to fans.

I started going to games in '86, and they had already taken hold by then. I've also got a maroon "Wrecking Crew" towel with white lettering from '88. Those never caught on.

First rule about Wrecking Crew is that we don't talk about Wrecking Crew until we are a little higher than bottom quarter in defense. =)

And I have a maroon towel from the wildfire fundraiser a couple of years ago.

I thought the towels started my last year there which was '84 but I could be wrong. 12th man on the kickoff teams started either '81 or '82 which at the time caused quite a stir when the tryouts started. Those guys had nothing to lose (except their mobility) and went full-out kamikaze on the kickoffs!
