How on earth could Hugh Freeze lead his first team in 2012 to a 7-6 record, when Butch Jones could barely salvage 5-7 last year with his first Tennessee team? Obviously Tennessee has a larger fan base, more $$, larger name impact with recruits and a more recent success.

I thought about it and my initial conclusions that Houston Nutt left Ole Miss in better shape makes absolutely no sense, because Derek Dooley crushed Houston Nutts last team, which would show that Tennessee was in relatively better shape than Ole Miss at transition.

Is Hugh just that much better of a coach/strategist/evaluator than Butch? Was Butch Jones overrated to begin with, given that Brian Kelly handed him the keys to the Cincinnati program that was hitting on all cylinders and all he had to do was not totally screw it up? Is there something I am missing about the state of the Tennessee program between Dooley and Jones

They lost 7 of their 12 games.

ETA: Freeze >>> Butch. No need to compare these two.

ETA: Nutt left Ole Miss in better shape than Dooley left TN? lulz. Nutt went 2-10 (0-8) his last year.

Both Freeze and Jones are great recruiters... but one just stops there and hopes that will be enough. The other one is a good coach.

Tennessee had a harder schedule.

12 Ole Miss:
@ #1 Alabama
@ #5 Georgia
#5 Texas A&M
@ #14 LSU
#19 Texas
#23 Vanderbilt

13 Tennessee:
#2 Auburn
#4 South Carolina
@ #5 Missouri
@ #7 Alabama
@ #9 Oregon
#24 Vanderbilt

Edit: They beat South Carolina but still lost to 4-8 Florida.

Neither schedule is discernibly harder. Those are both brutal.

Yeah Butch Jones is overrated. I have watched Muschamp out coach him up and down the field 2 years in a row with Driskel at QB. UT will be looking for a new coach in a year or 2, rinse and repeat.

Enjoy freeze while you have him. He will get out of that shithole as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

They went 5-7 because they exceeded expectations by beating USC.

I can't even deal with the stupidity of this statement. Look at the mess Dooley left the program in. These freshman UT has right now are the first freshman on campus that CBJ has had a full season to recruit. Just wait till the Vols are back, because when they are, its going to be scary.

I guess we swap out Oregon with someone easy, win 6 games and then play a bowl game vs. some shitty opponent and then voila, 7-6!!!!

Worley and Peterman both were injured last year as well.

Dobbs had to come in during the Alabama game and then started the last 4 games of the season. Starting a true freshman QB is going to be pretty rough.

Tbh, I hope he has developed and matured a ton since then. What scares me about Dobbs is that all through spring training and fall camp... Dobbs was 3rd behind Peterman. And Peterman is awful.

And Dobbs is going to start Sat if Worley can't go.. which it looks like, since he isn't throwing in practice and Dobbs/Peterman are getting first team snaps.

I hope they don't do this. While it will make their record look better going forward, I enjoy seeing them play the Oregons and Oklahomas... not the Small State U.
