How desperate is Tennessee to compete with Bama?

If we’re all being honest about this situation, you know that’s what is driving this disastrous coaching search. They haven't beaten their biggest rival in over a decade, and I think they've become desperate to find their own Nick Saban. That’s what the Gruden obsession boils down to and the reason so many potential quality hires like a Leach are being torpedoed. The problem for Tennessee though is that there is only 1 Saban and maybe 4 or 5 other super elite coaches, and those guys aren’t leaving their current positions. They’ve essentially poisoned their own coaching search because they arent going to land a coach of Saban’s caliber, and they’ve essentially told the next tier of quality cosches that they aren't good enough for Tennessee. This is why they've ended up with Dooley and Butch, and they are gonna end up with another flaming bag of dog shite hire.

They think they are a better program than they are, and they set their sights too high from day one. When that didn’t happen instead of accepting reality they had a meltdown like we have never seen.

MSU is a great example of what you can achieve with realistic expectations when hiring a head coach.

I don't know. Right now I think UT would be happy to settle for a coach who can beat Vandy and win a conference game.

Real words of wisdom here---yet UT, with their latest inbred coup, seems determined to keep going back to the stupid well and even fall below their Banana Republic status.

At this point, they'll settle for competing with Kentucky.

I think they should hire Hugh Freeze. He got off light.

Of course UT wants to compete with Bama. Doesn’t everyone? Our problem is waaaay deeper than that. It’s a power struggle up top. Top booster wants puppets hired that they control and still have the money flowing in. It’s a way bigger mess that may possibly get corrected and it took this debacle to make it possible. Still not sure it gets fixed but more possible than it was last week.

Tennessee is historically the second best program in the SEC. They should set their expectations high.
