I have a Bama student in my household, and he complains about these people often. He thinks they give the academic institution a bad name. I can't argue with him.

I've heard them called sidewalk alumni or T-shirt alumni, among other things. Every SEC school has them (with the possible exception of Vanderbilt). But in Alabama they are EVERYWHERE. I would venture to guess that Alabama has the highest percentage of non-alumni "fans" of any other school. And most are illiterate.

That would likely be LSU since Alabama has to split these type of fan between Bama and Auburn.

Really... Who cares? Should alumni be policing these people and trying to put a stop to them?

All of the 20 pieces of Alabama football merchandise they buy every year makes the University plenty of money

It's all throughout the south. Alabama just has more because they're historically prominent and the state has no professional sports teams. Idiots can cheer for whoever they want. Not my problem.

I'm not an alumnus... should I let that stop me from pulling for the school I was an athlete at?

If the football programs were only supported by alumni and current students college football as you know it wouldnt exist.

Should we also be embarrassed about them because they are from Alabama? Or because they are American? Shouldn't all Americans be embarrassed about them?

I dislike the portion of the fanbase who do nothing but talk about Alabama football, call Finebaum, feel the need to insert Alabama football into every conversation, etc.

However, that applies to graduates and sidewalks, and applies to every fan base.

No other team in America has gone full North Korean. Sure we all have a few, but Alabama has thousands. Those same type of people in Louisiana are not likely to give a shite about LSU football AS THERE IS NO SOCIAL REQUIREMENT THAT THEY "DECLARE" LIKE IN ALABAMA. Those type of people in Louisiana probably don't care about sports and if they do it's certainly not college football, maybe The Saints. If I took a poll of a random street outside of Baton Rouge probably 80% of the people wouldn't give a damn one way or another. That's NOT the central part an average guy's identity in any way.

The Bama fans that tailgate with us are Bama grads and good Southern people. Entirely normal in every respect. But That WalMarks t-shirt-Bama- fan crowd is embarrassing The South, The SEC and making me feel cheesy about revering SEC football.

The Alabama football program is what put southern football on the map. They are the elite of the elite and teams such as Notre Dame are casually mentioned when the sporting gurus talk about traditional powerhouses. No other team in the SEC carries the swag that Bama has and people from the state of Alabama, as well as around the globe associate with winners. Alabama is the program they select. You jelly?

Yea that's laughable. The average Louisianian without a degree is neutral to CFB? GTFO.

And also the most tradition and national championships so it goes with the territory.

I lived in Louisiana and Mississippi and the locals in both regions are the same. Its a southern thing not a Bama thing.
