So if AU had of just come clean after getting caught we would have been ok?
Probably not since the Head Coach AND the Athletic Director was involved with Ramsey's payments.

If you listen to Ramsey, he'll tell you his loans weren't loans they were handshakes. There was nothing to pay back

If you listen to Clinton-Dix he'll tell his loans were loans not handshakes. His were paid back

If you listen to Dye, he'll tell you he knew nothing about it.

If you listen to Saban he'll tell you the coach involved is suspended pending an investigation.

It may be argued that the perception in Indianapolis was denial once it was brought to light versus being forthcoming and corrected.

I'm certain you'll find a different perspective for every person you ask.

My elementary understanding is that an Auburn coach was recorded giving Ramsey money to feed his wife and child as Ramsey was basically crying to him begging for the help.

Larry Blakeney was the coach, and was showed the door at Auburn. Landed in Troy, and is one of the longest tenured head coaches in the NCAA. The phrase "keep it down home, cuz" was part of the recordings.

AJ Green sold a jersey and I may be wrong but wasn't Dareus suspended for dealing with an agent?

AJ Green sold his jersey for $1,000 to someone the NCAA deemed to be an Agent. Dareus went to a party and his travel was provided by someone the NCAA deemed to be an agent. Both were forced to pay the amount of the violation to a charity. In both cases, they had 4 game suspensions due to the value of the impermissible benefits.

Also, from bottom of page 2 in case you missed answer to your original question:

Several factors make the situations different:

1) The amount - the amount accepted is less than $500 which, precedence shows, warrants a 2-4 game suspension in today's NCAA environment.
2) The disclosure - I believe the NCAA found out about the AU thing and AU may not have been as cooperative in 1991 as they were in 2010. In HaHa's case, the issue was self investigated and self reported.
3) The repayment - HaHa provided records to indicate he repaid the loan prior to the season
4) The Cooperation - as mentioned above, I believe (though an AU fan can correct me if wrong) that AU didn't cooperate with the investigation in the Ramsey case. (kind of like Bama's lack of cooperation in the Langham case in 1993)

the irony of that is, nowadays you can hear Larry Blakeney on the radio begging people to give money to Troy.

People move on, they forgive and forget most of the time. Hell, AU named their field after Pat Dye, and he's been a regular fixture over there since Tubs was fired. The AU fans love Dye like an old grandpa now......

I was around and here is the biggest difference: Auburn covered it up - "keep it down home cuz." And Ramsey, for his own reasons, had a beef with Auburn (for him not being successful in the pros - yeah right) and wanted to bring them down.

Randy...EVERYONE in AU lied, hid every bit of the evidence & wasn't a bit cooperative

Bama self-investigated and proved it was a loan that Haha paid back, not just a payment like they discovered at AU

pretty big difference

Personally, I'm a little tired of LB. I think the game has passed him by. We had a couple of good seasons with great coordinators, but they all move on to bigger and better things. Tony Franklin and Neal Brown were good OC's while at Troy. Vic Koenning was a great DC. We used to be known for great defense not that long ago. Now we can't defend worth a crap. I'm hoping that Troy gets to a winning record and a bowl game this year, but in the back of my mind if they lose out it may finally be what gets Blakeney to retire. He's been crap since they named the field after him.

Because Pat Dye the Coach and athletic director at the time denied and covered it up. The impermissible benefits that Pat denied were brought to his attention while he was in front of NCAA being questioned about impermissible benefits going on with tennis and other programs under his watch.

Auburn Head coach also serving Athletic director knew and tried to covered up. That's a big No No.

He did a report on how racist the culture was at Auburn. Turned it in to his teachers. It brought the wrath of the school down on him.

I'm not reading this whole thread, but there are a few significant differences in the facts.

Regardless of those differences, the biggest difference is that the NCAA doesn't punish schools like they used to. While the Dix infraction wasn't that big of a deal, there was a day and time when Bama would have lost a scholarship or two and been on probation for that. The NCAA used to over react often with their enforcement, now they error on the side of under punishing.

Different day and time, as well as the amount

This is a big part of it, with the different day and time being very significant. Also, in the case of Ramsey the head coach actively engaged in covering it up. Google 'keep it down home, cuz'.

But still, the day and time component can't be overstated. If HaHa happened in the early 1990s there's a very good chance the penalties would have been much more severe.

Because players will be getting some sort of stipend or cut of likeness sales before the more severe punishment would be over. The NCAA is scared shitless of being portrayed as the old greedy regime on it's way out, which is why JFF got a stern finger wag.

Clinton-Dix got $300 which he repaid. I have no idea why it's a big deal. It's certainly not cheating.

If you believe that bullshite, let me send you all of my winning European lottery ticket emails. Bama has a payroll of players that even Auburn bag man like Lowder and ole yella would be proud of.
