High School Football: Your Alma Mater

My alma mater (Kansas City, MO area) competes in 6A (largest class) and has won 1 state championship. Handful of finals appearances…recently started to pump out some P5/NFL talent (which Mizzou has missed on all of )

Are you using all time wins? Because these schools just started football long before the others in most cases. Valdosta just cheated their asses off better than anyone in the state for a long time

1 state title for my HS. A handful of state runner ups. Routinly put 2-5 guys in D1 each year. Has one guy in the NFL right now.

But when I played we were dog shite those yew years. Made the playoffs and got smoked in the 1st round my sophomore year, then 5-6 and 4-7 my Jr and Sr year.

We were getting our arse beat so bad in that playoff game, my skinny arse subbed in for the guy who would later play a few downs in the SEC (before injuries) at half time playing Free Safety.

Not really. Only 5 playoff appearances and 7 winning seasons since they started playing varsity in 98.

And 15 years later Probst is back on reality TV even after getting fired.

Avondale High School was like a small college...huge and a spread out campus located in a very wealthy Atlanta suburb of Avondale Estates. Limousines dropping off their kids at the front instead of them riding the school buses. I wasn't one of them.

**Many athletes went on to compete at the collegiate level. Probably the most famous was Charles Dudish, QB in class of 1967...recruited by over 200 schools around the country, ABC-TV did a national TV one-hour special all about him and his recruitment. He decided on Georgia Tech (yuck)...the pressure of all the limelight and to succeed got to him and he bombed out as an athlete at GT. Today, he lives in suburban Atlanta with a great family and lots of stories to tell.

**Undefeated regular season every year 1963-1967

**Never lost a home game at Death Valley (yes, the name of our stadium) from the 1950's until 1968 and not again until the mid-1970's.

**No losing seasons in the history of the school except the year it opened in 1951 and not again until the 1990's.



Beginning in the 1990's, due to enrollment decline from its high of over 3,200 students down to about 1,000, our storied program declined and went downhill.

Avondale High was a very tough school, academically speaking (college prep). We excelled state-wide in many sports, too, winning state titles. Sadly, Avondale High closed its doors for good in 2011 which was a big shock to me and all the alumni. It is missed.






Avondale opened in 1951. In 1955, during the week before classes dismissed for the summer break, a major fire broke out and leveled the school. It was re-built in time -- of course! -- for classes the following September.

It’s absolute garbage in football. When I was there, they made it to the third round of the playoffs off of back to back district titles. Even so, that simply meant they were one of the final 16 left in one of class 5A’s two divisions. That’s as good as they have ever been.

School opened over 50 years ago and has made the playoffs about 10 times, getting past round 1 five times. It’s a shitty FB school in an area of the state that is not an FB hotbed.

For such a small town with a school that didn’t recruit we did alright. I played for Luther Welch in the brickyard. The town had 5,000 souls but the country added another 20,000 and the town shutdown for home games.

It was pretty cool to see the alum come help out. Eddie Lee Ivey always had family on the team. Ray Guys son was a couple classes behind me but he came around every so often, as did Chris Mohr. We put a bunch of guys in college programs and well after me they had 3 kids in the SEC at the same time.

I was a booster for years and use to really enjoy the camaraderie of highschool football in a small town. An injury only allowed me to play one year under Welch and Burnett but I have great memories and friends off that team.

I played 2 sports in college but they were not the big sports and it was a small school. Just not the same.
