This was explained to me a decade or so ago.

Take someone like Jimmy Rane (Yellawood guy). He's a billionaire and his company makes $1 billion a year in revenue. He has a lot of influence at Auburn.

At Mississippi State, there is a group of guys (The Cigar Boys). These are guys that have net worths of a million or so and run small/mid-size companies that together wouldn't have $100 million in revenue.

Sure you have your Davis Wade's (founder of AFLAC) but they are making one time donations. Hell, one of State's richest alums has a SEC rival coach in their commercial. Those guys don't GAF about Mississippi State football.

But the Cigar Boys do. But they don't have FU money to throw around. Need $25k, sure we can get that together. Need $5 million? Aint going to happen. The Cigar Boys love them some baseball too. So if they are going to play the NIL game, its going to be baseball.

They hated Mullen because he wouldn't kiss their arse. They hated Moorhead because he wouldn't kiss their arse. They hated Leach because he told them to kiss his arse. Arnett did what he was told. He was told to shed the Air Raid and he did. It ruined any chance of us having a decent season.

This is the first coaching hire for our AD. He's an Oklahoma guy so he's been around a good football program. But the Cigar Boys are going to be way too involved in this hire and we are going to screw it up.

This is what is happening at State, LSU and Ole Miss also.

If these guys are calling the shots, it’s a miracle that State has ever been decent in football. That’s real poverty program shite.

I literally answered that in the OP.

Hell, the guy running point for Cam in that transaction probably has never made $40k in his life. Our boosters suck.

State isn't supported by multibillion dollar Sanderson Farms?

It wouldn't have mattered if he had. Dan Mullen is one of those people you don't need a reason to hate. He is an instigator who lets players take the penalties for stuff he does like getting a fight started on the field.

How does a group of guys worth only around a million have so much power?

I know dozens of farmers that are state grads worth tens of millions. Including my wife’s family

The Sandersons are generous to the academic side but aren’t interested in getting involved in athletics past premium seating.

And that's the case for a lot of our wealthy donors. We just received a $100 million gift. All academic and student life.

The group that would give money to NIL or for a big name coach are small town car dealership owners, heavy equipment dealers, etc. Nice living, especially for Mississippi, but wouldn't sniff the board room at other SEC schools. We have a Sun Belt booster network, essentially.

What about the Seal family? I know they donate a lot to academics

It does seem a lot of our big money people do little to help athletics. Which is a shame

I'm good friends with Bill Bell's son (Bell the guy the Newton's tried soliciting money out of) and let me tell you, that family has more money than they know what to do with... yet nowhere near as much power over Mississippi State as you'd think.

Seals gave $1 million for the Seal Center back in the day and have given 10 times that to academics.

The Bishop family, that is worth $3 billion and founded an Energy company, gave $100 million earlier this year with the earmark that nothing goes to athletics.

Yeah it wasn't Bell that Cam was running through. Bell was one of the ones they tried to get the money from. The guy running point was a 7 on 7 drifter from Florida.

Nah LSU is working NIL on all fronts. Its not like Bama though where they are pouring everything into football.

Yep. LSU, Alabama, etc. were doing it this was in the 70s/80s.

Look at the NIL sponsors for State.

LINK /

The highest level is $50,000.

There are seven sponsors.

A nursing home
A metal company
A law firm
A barge company
A couple of small tech companies
A ortho surgeon

Only seven in the $25k category as well.

One of them doesn't even have a logo - they just sent in their business card.

Some franchise restaurants in the $10k category and a few more in the $5k.

You add up everyone on our NIL page and you don't have $1 million a year in donations.

It's bad. And its worse than you think. I bet a third of the donations are going to salaries and overhead, so we have maybe $700k for all athletes.

Or you can visit the links I provided and look at the donor history at Mississippi State. Our big time donations are largely academic, with quote a few stressing "not for athletic use."

A nursing home is listed as our No. 1 NIL donor. Its pathetic.
