I found this interesting. Data is based on the historical records from 1974 to 2012.

In order of temp:
College Station, TX

Gainesville, FL

Baton Rouge, LA

Tuscaloosa, AL

Columbia, SC

Starkville, MS

Athens, GA

All the rest are too close to yankee country.

Looks to be pretty marginal in terms of temperature. I'd be interested to see the humidity factor in those towns.

Athens, GA - 94%
Starkville, MS 94%

The other interesting thing is how often teams play Big Games that early. I don't know the answer - but obviously a patsy in the heat is different than a top 25.

From the same location:

quote:

Dew point is often a better measure of how comfortable a person will find the weather than relative humidity because it more directly relates to whether perspiration will evaporate from the skin, thereby cooling the body. Lower dew points feel drier and higher dew points feel more humid. Over the course of a year, the dew point typically varies from 32°F (dry) to 75°F (very muggy) and is rarely below 16°F (dry) or above 77°F (oppressive).

Here are the Dew Points and the crossover date where ideal comfort level is reached in the Fall.

Gainesville, FL - 76° - Oct 30
Baton Rouge, LA - 76° - Oct 23
College Station, TX - 75° - Oct 28
Tuscaloosa, AL - 75° - Oct 20
Starkville, MS - 75° - Oct 18
Columbia, SC - 73° - Oct 24
Athens, GA - 72° - Oct 22

Should help give an idea about humidity, and how long the humidity lasts.

I don't know about East Texas, but i'd venture to say Baton Rouge and Gainesville are the hottest based on temp and humidity

Yeah Gainesville seems to be the worst place to play in September.

Yep..BHG is a unique stadium..it doesn't really look very big from the outside, but once you get in, you realize it's bigger and almost sunk in the ground-looking, definitely fitting for "the swamp"

So it's safeto say through all of this that there is a marginal, if any, difference that is likely to cause no ill effects.

How is the Swamp and Death Valley set up? I know Kyle has the A&M bench on the West side and thus in the shade very quick in to the afternoon but the visitor is on the East side and thus in the full sun until late in the afternoon.

They try very hard to avoid afternoon games at Kyle in September (only do it if TV demands it). The '02 Tech game and the aforementioned Fresno State game were both 100 degree games with little wind and people were passing out left and right. Several folks had to go to the hospital.

Having lived in a few different places within the south I would venture to say Kentucky gets to be just as hot and humid as most places further south. The difference is that the heat breaks about a month or so earlier than everywhere else. By late October its downright chilly in Commonwealth stadium.

I don't think it affects SEC players much, but it is clearly the reason the Big Ten has not won a national title since 2002. You know...the scorching heat from 7-11 PM in places like Pasadena and an indoor dome in New Orleans.

might have been an issue if they joined the big 10. I doubt many SEC teams will be impressed though.

I still remember the LSU-Appalachian State game that started at 10 Am. on a hot August day(moved up because of Hurricane Gustav)

I think some people had to be escorted out for heat related issues, and everyone got free water..Must have been 96 with 80% humidity and not a cloud in the sky

Hottest game I've ever been to. Had to go into the bowels of the stadium to cool off.

Death Valey is set up with the sidelines facing east west. LSU sits on the West side facing East.

I have been to a game at A&M in the afternooon. The sun was bad not so much from the heat but from being in your eyes.

FYI The reason LSU plays at night was originally for 2 reasons (i) the heat and (ii) to allow fans from NO to get to the games (there was a train that came to the stadium a let people off around the old baseball field.)

As to the effect of heat & humidity, I was at a NCCA national track meet at LSU in the 70's. There was a world class sprinter from USC, that passed out in the blocks in the 200. All he did was warm up.

Try playing 60 min with all that equipment on.

The field is sunk into the ground a few dozen feet and the walls then shoot up pretty steep right away. With the set up it is almost impossible to get any breeze. Like Kyle Field, our bench gets shade in the mid-afternoon, the visitors get full sun almost all the time.

Honestly, it can be unbearable at times, especially those 3:30 starts on CBS in September and October. The TV timeouts just kill you.

Death Valley is set on the low side of a hill on the east side. The west side is on the riverside. The high point is the river and the ground slopes down toward the stadium. The stadium is further from the river than the Superdome. Compare the water at the dome after Katrina to see how much lower Tiger Stadium is. Also there is a levee on the river.

Finally when Archer was at LSU, the actual field was lowered about 6 feet so the fans on the front rows could see over the players on the sideline.

The design of the stadium also contributes. No wind can get down to the field. This is one of the reasons it is so loud. The sound cannot get out.

I have friends who played and we hire players during the summer. They all say there is no wind on the field itself. In fact they you feel like there is no oxygen on the field and the noise seems to pound on you and never leave. They also say the heat and humidity is worse at night than in the day for some reason.

I must be getting older because the heat has been killing me lately.

I start sweating just taking the damn trash out.

Yes, the hot air coming out of College Station is horrible.
