I'm not defending Gus

0-12 how many times has Auburn been ranked higher than those teams they are facing on the road?

A few of those. Not Bama in that span, but there were some not very good LSU and UGA teams he shite the bed against in that span.

And if anything that piles more on Gus. Being paid like a top-5 coach and not being ranked anywhere near that.

Gus was incapable of developing a QB out of high school. The only time he ever won anything at AU was with a transfer QB. He could never develop WRs for that matter. That in itself were glaring problems that seemingly would've never gotten fixed. Basically it was hope and pray to land a transfer that was developed by someone else, or bust. For the amount of money they paid him, that is absolutely unacceptable IMO.

I can go back in time and list all the bad games Gus lost that were inexcusable.

2014 BCS Title game
2014 Texas A&M
2014 Georgia
2015 Bowl Game vs Wisconsin
The entire 2015 season
2016 Georgia
2017 LSU
2017 SEC Championship Game was so poorly coached
2018 Peach Bowl vs UCF
2018 LSU
2018 Miss St
2018 Tennessee
2020 Bowl Game vs. Minnesota
2020 Georgia who started a 4th string walk on at QB
2020 South Carolina
2020 Texas A&M

All of these losses he either had a big lead and blew it, got outcoached BADLY or lost to a lesser opponent. It just happened all too much.

That's the frustration. Auburn clearly isn't a top-5 program, but when you give a guy top-5 money you don't expect to finish unranked as much as he did.

I have no doubt about that.

I think this is why people who are sportswriters have these kinds of jobs. They're incapable of anything else.

I’m not saying he needed to be 12-0, but 0-12 is not top 5 money results.

LSU, Georgia, And especially Alabama are “some of the best teams in college football and everything that goes with that,” but you’d think you could get A road win at some point in a dozen tries.

Alabama is always top 5, and I agree beating them anywhere is an upset. There have been Georgia and LSU non top 10 teams we’ve lost to on the road.

C Nite,

I’m not sure what I typed that upset you.

Bama is king.

Gus got about top 25 or 30 results for top 5 pay.

I agree Gus has some great moments, but I stand by my prior post.

We paid caviar prices for shad roe.

Not horrible, however, in the 28 losses there are many blowouts.

Top 5 coaches get their team to compete until the final whistle.

Saban’s worst loss at Bama (until Clemson) was maybe 11 points.

Gus parlayed a few great moments into a $49 million payday.

It is what it is.

Lobster price for the contract. Caviar price to fire him.

With recruiting this year, Gus may have ordered himself the Caviar.

Funny what happens when that luck runs out

I agree there is an element of “luck” in football, but for “luck” to be a factor a coach has to find a way for his team to keep in the game for 4 quarters.

At the end of the day, Gus did not keep us in some of the big games for four quarters. The other teams certainly deserve credit, but a “top 5” paid coach must earn that money by having his team prepared each week and recruiting at a high level each year.

Gus failed. He was maybe a Solid B coach getting Valedictorian money.

I keep seeing articles where they talk about Malzahn won 2/3 of his games like Auburn is making a mistake getting rid of him.

The dude was a dead man walking. Had not sniffed a division title since 2017, recruiting was awful, gets beaten by UGA and LSU every year and only got lucky against Bama once in a while. Why wouldn't they get rid of him?
If they had someone better lined up, then fine, make the change. But change for change's sake is a dangerous proposition. Look at Texas firing Mack Brown. It's pretty hard to argue that they would have been any worse off keeping Mack than running him off in the thought that just about anyone would be better.

Gus appeared to have reached a plateau, and might have been staring at a downward spiral, but that plateau that he was on wasn't a terrible place to be given the current landscape, at least for the short term, and with no sound plan to make a change for the better.

I'll ask again...how do you or anybody else not on our campus know that we don't have a plan. You realize there are still teams playing this weekend, don't you? People need to tune out all the bullshite rumors because they are almost never right when it comes to our coaching searches.

If Auburn comes back and makes a great hire that was clearly already in the works when Gus was terminated, I will tip my cap to them for making a bold move.

If they hire Kevin Steele, or the other rumored candidates, will you come back and admit that trading Gus for one of those guys was a low percentage gamble?
