How long do your Mikes normally live? Do you retire them at a certain age or keep them til they pass away? Not a troll just curious. I know he gets the best of care.

LSU's first Mike lived to be 21 years (1935-1958). Mike II lasted two years (there is some mystery to the circimstances of his death). Mike III (18 yrs), Mike IV (14 years) and Mike V (17 years) preceded the current LSU tiger.

After Mike III's death in 1976 LSU implemented a three-stage retirement program for aging tigers. Stage 1 - He no longer participates in pre-game events. Stage 2 - He stops attending games altogether. Stage 3 - He retires to a new location.

It appears Mike VI likes doing things his way, and has jumped to stage 2 of his retirement on his own.

Thanks for the info! I knew you kept them for a long time just didn't know the details. He is certainly a badass mascot to have.

I hate his pussy arse PETA trainers who open the door to a trailer and won't do anything at all to coax him into it.

That's the world we live in now. If LSU even pokes Mike with a stick then animal rights activists will be all over the university worse than they already are. Its either that or risk losing the right to have a live mascot altogether. Based on LSU's actions, it appears to be more concerned with treating Mike humanely than the whims of drunk football fans.

I don't know exactly how they treat him, but if that's true, it's a shame that I discipline my dogs more often and harshly than they do a full grown tiger

Not sure. I think the only one to be "retired" was Mike IV. Mike III died on campus from some complications and his vets instituted the policy to retire the Mikes before they got too old and kicked the bucket at school.

I think IV went to the zoo, but V died during surgery from renal failure.

Why is Mike in a cage to begin with? Is he a rescue or something?

LSU did not wish to buy a tiger but instead sought for one to be donated to the school. On July 27, 2007 WBRZ ABC News 2 announced that LSU had located a tiger at Great Cats of (Idaville) Indiana, an Indiana-based large cat and carnivore rescue facility.[8]

Tigers are considered to be "wild" animals, and PETA thinks wild animals should never be removed from their natural environment. Dogs are considered to have been the first tame animals, and have accompanied humans for 10,000 years.

Am I the only one that's anticipating PETA throwing a shitfit for putting a birthday cap on his head?

Happy birthday, 'ole baw. I certainly take it for granted that I have walked by a live tiger on the way to class most of my collegiate career

You're right. LSU could use a cattle prod, or tie Mike up with ropes and drag him in, or tranquilize him (good for pulling around an unconscious tiger), or they could get bats and beat the shite out of him if he didn't get in the cage....

or LSU doesn't consider opinions like yours to be valid.

ETA: Since you don't realize there is a difference between imposing your will on a 600 lb. tiger and a dog, you should consider volunteering your services to LSU. I can only speak for myself, but I think this board would survive without you.

The dog comment was about PETA, you missed the point

And you must not realize that the vet school isn't gonna let volunteers off the street work with Mike. So that joke doesn't work

They will never do anything to this Mike to cause him to be skittish. He's a rescue Tiger, not one they raised from a cub. If anyone knows anything about cats you know you aren't going to make them do anything they don't want to do without sedation. They're not interested in making Mike a circus act. He gets treated like any animal at the finest zoo. They let him be as natural as they can be considering his surroundings. We got lucky with Mike V because he hated the costumed mascot. Every time it came around Mike would roar and get all pissy. This Mike still acts like a kitten in many ways. If you go out to his cage during the week you can see Dr. Baker out there with Mike and he will answer your questions and talk to you for hours about Mike's care. My wife and I have taken the kids up there to see him and spent hours talking to him. They've tried everything to get him in the cage. They practice with him all off-season. They tried putting big slabs of meat in the trailer to coax him. It all works when no one is around. When the Fall rolls around and all of those people gather around to watch him get in the trailer he just refuses to go in.

You didn't mention any options, at all. You only whined about Mike's gameday absence affecting your LSU football experience.
